13 Dec - The 'Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol' premiere

December 13th, 2011.

A mere one day ago I'd been at the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" premiere, and now I was back for another - Mission Impossible's latest instalment. I know it might be cool to hate on the actor and/or the franchise, but while the second film was utter crap (AND long), the third was an excellent, gritty, film, so I'm actually up for seeing this film!

But that's not what this journal is all about - it's about the premiere. Here's how it went down:

Uniquely, this premiere was held at a circular location : the 360 degree walk around the BFI Imax. It's actually set below street level and with hanging vine trellises, all Babylonian style. I had high hopes for good photos, what with the stage right in front of me and a product-placement-licious new branded car to my left. Neither, sadly, contributed much to the photography.

"If Tom Cruise comes to this thing, PLEASE let him mention the hat." Failing that, maybe the ample scaffolding all around the Imax theatre.

I am such a fan of schadenfreude that part of me would have loved to see this man having to take his LG mobile out of his pocket to take photos after not one but three DSLRs failed in unison. (Sorry dude, hope the premiere went well for you...)

Good news for fans of Tom Cruise : he's HERE, and he is signing and/or posing for absolutely anyone and everyone. (Well.. when I say 'anyone and everyone', one of his Personal Assistants looked at the cameras in our group of four, asked us what 'we' were doing in 'this' area and wouldn't believe we were just civilians. True, if rather devastating and yet oddly complimentary story.)

I had this photo 100% set up, fully anticipated, until some dude with a leather jacket on the right (cropped out) chose that precise moment to amble slowly across my frame of view like he was a multiple Oscar nominee (He wasn't. He looked vaguely drunk). Gah. There's no justice, or I'd have Sith powers, or a sniper rifle, for occasions like this!

OMG - it's Yellow Cap(less) Guy and Tom Cruise. He (YCG) hasn't been at a premiere for Aaaages. 'A Dangerous Method', I think, where he was chatting up Keira Knightley. The guy is smooth, what can I say?

"You can be my wingman? Bull5hit, you can be mine? Am I right?" "Right" Tom Cruise, lest it be forgotten, arrived at the event a *full hour* before anyone else from the film did, just to sign for absolutely not quite absolutely everyone.

"Right"

Tom Cruise, lest it be forgotten, arrived at the event a *full hour* before anyone else from the film did, just to sign for absolutely not quite absolutely everyone.

Tom Cruise is, regardless of what you might think about him, his private life, his acting, or even his choice of jacket (which, personally, I think is very nice), a pretty cool guy. The security dude to his right, however, might be able to suck out your soul with that look.

At about this stage in the procedings, four rows of autograph dealers crushed behind our area to get yet more signatures. To their credit, Mr Cruise's assistants and security were more than capable of dismissing them and their greed (!), but let's just say their efforts didn't help my short-range photography. Sigh.

Apparently she's in the film, and perhaps even more excitingly she is not Tom Cruise! (the other actors in the film have arrived, in other words). If this is French Actress Lea Seydoux, she (a) is in this film, and (b) was also in 'Inglourious Basterds'.

Yellow Cap Guy attaches himself to actor Simon Pegg, who is probably only a little bit of a grey tinge of hair away from pulling off an 'elder statesman' look (?!)

In all the hour or so he spent in our area, this is pretty much the ONLY candid, unrehearsed photo of Tom Cruise I was able to take. He is a consummate professional, so candid is a bit rare!

Actress Paula Patton is exceedingly lively and animated. She was also in "Hitch" with Will Smith, "De Ja Vu" with Denzel Washington, and in a dress with rhinestones sufficient to populate a Texas chorus line.

Director Brad Bird has won two Oscars (both Ratatouille and The Incredibles won best animated feature Academy Awards). He also directed The Iron Giant ... and this film! He may or may not also be happy to take a look at spec scripts from fans at these events.

Civilisations rise and fall, men with mobile phones leap balletically, and guys with furry hats simply *are* men with furry hats. But Tom Cruise keeps answering every question he's posed with as much time as he has available.

And then for no readily apparent reason (but totally in keeping with the randomness quotient of this premiere) Gillian Anderson shows up. In her interview she said she was here to see Simon Pegg. Ooh.. Tom Cruise just got served, if my understanding of the concept is correct!!

Meanwhile, the photographic opportunities are never wasted when the camera is trained on Simon Pegg, and here's another. I know he owes my five dollars, but I think he thinks I've set debt collectors out there to grab it. (aka : Simon Pegg looking quirkily awesome, part IV)

I have no idea who it is but it does remind me oddly that I never did manage to achieve my ambition of photographing a drunken Supermodel Kate Moss while in London. She's calmed down a lot since then, though. (Me, 2014 : still haven't photographed Kate Moss, drunk or otherwise)

One last shot of Mr Cruise, and I'm outta here! Along with Will Smith, he seems to be the most fan-focussed A-Lister in the business. (Vin Diesel, unsurprsingly, not so much)

So.... that's Another One For The Archive of movie premieres, and that's it for 2011 premiere-wise, and it's 'until next time' and 'Merry Christmas' and all that....

And all I want for Christmas is a neurotoxin-filled blowdart gun to tranquilise autograph dealers with. (Hopefully Santa comes through for me, and for you!)

12 Dec - 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' premiere

December 12th, 2011.

Hello, and after a slight gap following the most recent premiere (the British Independent Film Awards are yet to receive their journal entry because ISO6400 on the Pentax is all about Art but not enough so), I'm back. Or rather, premieres are back. I was always here.

Anyway, the final two premieres for the year are back-to-back on a Monday and Tuesday, and the first of them is 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' - the Americanised version of the Swedish version of the miniseries which was also a bestselling book....

Here's how it went down (other than, you know, the director probably not showing up):

I've read the books - they're good. I've watched first of the movies in Swedish - it was good if lightly harrowing. I've now seen the trailer and movie poster of the Americanised version and am not yet alarmed. However the guy in the black hoodie clutching his book is making slightly alarmed.

Your host for this evening will be blonde, glamorous, and adjusting her hair/head-set for a little while to make sure the angle it sits at won't mortally offend Daniel Craig.

Actress Rooney Mara is first to emerge from the warmth of the cinema bar / cafe / pre-event drinks, and poses for the VIP Paparazzi. (The regular Paps were sent to the far back of the event, away from the women and chillun, with much protest, and we got the spot they'd been eyeing greedily. Winners!)

Stephen Zaillian was the screenwriter, and his hairdresser a structural engineer. Zaillian was awarded an Oscar for adapting the movie Schindler's List for Steven Spielberg in 1993 (so ... they're not exactly making an obviously cheap copy/reboot of another country's beloved works - they're throwing actual money and skill at it)

She plays a hacker / computer genius in the film, and probably hopes nobody hands her an iPad and asks her to make it work or something.

A cursory glance at imdb suggests that Stellan Skarsgård may have been in every movie ever made. Well, specifically "Thor" and "Melancholia", though he wasn't at either premiere. He was also Bootstrap Bill Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean (the 'a' with the dot above his name was available via insert - symbol in Microsoft Word)

It's Daniel Craig!!! It's also a photo whose black'n'white version I called "DCraig" which got more comments in a two hour period than any photo I've posted on the website Redbubble, like, ever. So I take it I should post less Megan Fox and Anne Hathaway photos and more Daniel Craig and Justin Timberlake and.... erm.... Nick Frost photos?

Rooney Mara, among other roles, played the character Erica Albright in 'The Social Network'. It was a short but memorable role - same director. On which note, given this is a world premiere, where IS the director?

I have no idea who this is, but her and her three bandmates / posse / gaggle posed for shots right in front of us and I had a long zoom at 70mm and had to make a quick call on who to photograph.

This was actually a World Premiere, so clearly it would be awesome to take a photograph of Oscar-winning director of 'The Social Network' David Fincher, no? However, in that regard I may have a problem - I have no idea what David Fincher looks like. Here's attempt 1 of 3. (Getty Images says : No)

Attempt #2 of 3 proved to be actor Yorick van Wageningen, which the presenting interviewer for the event had a valiant attempt at pronouncing.

Yorick van Wageningen plays the vile character Bjurman in the film, and in all seriousness he mentioned it was not a particularly pleasant character to play, and broadly he prepared for it by avoiding getting to know Rooney Mara.

If this isn't director David Fincher, I may be all out of attempts. Actually it's actor/director/writer Steven Berkof, who plays the character-slash-hobbit (?) Frodo in the film (?)

Rooney Mara gets a quick wardrobe correction during the premiere. Her dress was a bit lace-like for the cold / rainy conditions.... so maybe she's also getting a quick injection of adrenaline so the frostbite and hypothermia doesn't set in.

"So would you say you're more into dubstep music or trance?". Actor Donald Sumpter is not David Fincher, and/but he has a large recurring role in 'Game of Thrones' which I really should watch since I've committed so much time to reading the books that series is based on.

Ah. It's the girl who didn't recognise me at two prior premieres, one of which was "Kung Fu Panda2"   I don't know her name either. It's still a platonic thing between us, clearly.

So cold though I am, that's premiere one of two to join my "Archive of Movie Premieres" before I head off on holiday to warmer climates. Tomorrow : Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol!

28 Nov - The 'Hugo in 3D' Royal Premiere

November 28th, 2011.

So after the disappointment and childish petulance of last week's "Puss In Boots Premiere"
it was time to head out again, this time for a Royal Screening Premiere. Historically, these have been quite interesting. I didn't do one last year, but the year before it was The Lovely Bones - attended by Charles and Camilla and the year before that it was A Bunch of Amateurs and Queen Elizabeth II herself attended

So.... who would it be this year? Keep your expectations in check and let's see how it all went down:

The red carpet is laid, the position is good, and as far as we know there should be some people coming. Premieres have their own particular kind of fog of war that people walking past leading ordinary lives don't care about. Like, at all.

Sniffer dogs are unusual premieres, however this is a Royal Screening coupled with a Premiere, so precautions have to be taken. Oddly these precautions do not involve turfing out irritating and rowdy autograph dealers and people who haven't showered in the past 96 hours.

Good news - it seems that a royal screening is enough to bring out A-list directors! (Why didn't they do THAT for Tintin. I bet Prince Harry would have LOVED that film...)

I don't know who this is. It's not Martin Scorcese, but apparently he's a producer. The movie, to be fair has ten of them, and even Johnny Depp is one (he didn't attend the premiere). I might have to check... maybe I was one? I mean... I DID attend the premiere.

It's Mr and Mrs Sir Ben Kingsley, who between them have a knighthood, an Oscar, a credited role in the movie 'Species' and a fetching beard/moustache.

And here we have Asa Butterfield (yes, I spelled that correctly) plays the role of 'Hugo Cabret' - after whom the title of the film is named. He has a few acting roles to his credit, as well as a pair of glasses.

Wow. I have a pair of trousers with that exact pattern.

With apologies for the intrusiveness of an extreme closeup, this is an extreme closeup of the guy who wrote Star Trek Nemesis (aka - the one that basically destroyed the franchise), but also wrote Gladiator and has two Oscar Nominations to his name (Stuart Baird). No reason to take off the long zoom,  really.

I also don't know who this is, but if it's actress Miranda Otto, I'll be saddened a bit as it will mean she's aged somewhat since Lord of the Ring. (Alternatively, she might be in her mid-80s in which case she looks spectacular) (As you may imagine, my smooth pickup lines make me quite the hit with The Ladiez...)

And completing the trilogy of "people I photographed without having a clue who they are", there is this lady. Alternatively, I just photographed her as a pretext to snap the wonderful shawl her husband (?) companion (?) accountant (?) is holding... possibly for her. Or himself. It's a great shawl.

Queen guitarist / writer Brian May walked past before I had a chance to switch lenses. To be fair, even a wide-angle lens might have had trouble fitting in all the hair. He didn't stop to sign or pose, so apologies for not being able to get a better shot.

Chloe Moretz was brilliant as Hit Girl in 2010's Kick-Ass, a movie that deserved to a hell of a lot better at the box office than it did. Also : Must watch 'Let Me In' a remake of a Swedish Horror film that's meant to be almost as good as the original. She's an absolute lock-in for photo for the day, unless I can get a photo of Martin Scorcese in focus, obviously.

"So... what would you do if you were Steven Spielberg for a day? Sorry... we usually don't ask people of your calibre that. Still...?" Not quite in focus... damnit.

Meanwhile, director Martin Scorcese has decided to sign for a bit! It seems a bit unfair that they put him next to the tallest minder and bodyguard for this premiere, though.

"A zit? here? how big???" Actress Chloe Moretz is, in theory, far too cool to be worried about looking uncool at a premiere. (Just watch Kick-Ass already. Sure, it's violent and not that funny... but it's COOL! And I'm way desensitised against blood thanks to Hollywood!)

Man at back : "Mister Scorcese will pretend to be interested in a maximum of one each of your stupid script ideas, okay?" Mr Scorcese : "Oooh! Look : Raging Bull II meets Rocky VII in 3D! I love it!"

Helen McCrory played Malfoy's mum Narcissa in the Harry Potter series. It's becoming fairly clear that in any gathering of 3 or 4 medium-to-high calibre English actors at a premiere, at least two will have a connection to the Harry Potter series, or be John Hurt. (Who was also in Harry Potter.)

Another quick go-through from a sniffer dog, the police presence increases steadily for fifteen minutes, and the red carpet is cleared. It's all going on.

So... that was a pretty good one. And naturally it joins "The Archive of Movie Premieres"

The last several of which were:
Puss In Boots - Banderas! Hayek!
My Week With Marilyn - Hermione! Dobby! Lily Potter! Gilderoy Lockhart! Madam Hooch!
Happy Feet 2 - Robin Wiliams! Elijah Wood! The Penguin?
Twilight : Breaking Dawn pt1 - RPatz! TLautz! KStewz!

Until next time!

24 Nov - The 'Puss In Boots' premiere

November 24th, 2011.

When I last posted one of these journals, I'd come off a day that had not one but TWO premieres. This premiere was a more usual stand-alone one, and it was for Dreamworks' "Puss In Boots". I don't know about you, but while the first two Shrek films were both excellent, in my opinion the last two weren't just poor, they were cynical money-printing exercises. However, based on what I've seen in both trailers and a 15 minute promo reel, this movie actually threatens to be good.

But then again, we all know that whether the movie is likely to be good or whether I'll watch the film is not relevant in terms of whether I'll go to the premiere... (I did go to the premiere of "Water For Elephants" for instance)

It's a brown carpet event, so you know that's special. (Either that, or the construction in Leicester Square has hit a pipe that it shouldn't)

For whatever reason, when I look at this what comes to mind is : "Times are tough even for Batman."

"Tim, I'm here in Leicester Square and all I can say is that if this doesn't catch Selma Hayek's attention, then I'm going straight to the pub. And I'm not getting changed beforehand"

The buildup and preparation continue for this premiere. And for a bit of randomness, feel free to google 'Mayor of Sao Paulo, Brazil'. Randomly, that's who this guy is. Don't ask. I didn't.

Director Chris Miller might have directed the sub-par Shrek 3, but (a) Puss in Boots looks better, and (b) he has five vocal roles in the movie, too. (c ) He was also the voice of the Magic Mirror in the Shrek films. The lady next to him is Producer Latifa Ouaou. THAT? Is an awesome surname.

Antonio Banderas has been in lots of films, and is famous enough that there are seemingly almost always the heads of people in front of him.

Embarrassing confession : Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz are somewhat interchangeable and indistinguishable in my mind. I hasten to point out that's partially because they're both female and both pretty and both have an accent. It's totally a complement.

I still think that this constitutes a kind of compliment.

Serious time for once : I don't mind fellow photgraphers, and I don't mind autograph hunters. And I only partially dislike fans who camp out overnight and use that as justification for holding up giant signs that block views for people six rows behind them. But Autograph DEALERS at this premiere were basically one step up from a pack of animals.

So.. that was another one "For the Archive" more than my enhanced view of my fellow humans who go to these things.

Some of the more recent premieres include:

My Week With Marilyn - Hermione! Dobby! Lily Potter! Gilderoy Lockhart! Madam Hooch!
Happy Feet 2 - Robin Wiliams! Elijah Wood! The Penguin?
Twilight : Breaking Dawn pt1 - RPatz! TLautz! KStewz!
Arthur Christmas - Nighy! Park! A billionaire's daughter!

Until next time!
