The 2017 BAFTAs, Royal Albert Hall

February 12th, 2017.

For the seventh time now I've had the good fortune of being able to get a public pen wristband to the BAFTAs red carpet, and for the first time it was held at the Royal Albert Hall (as opposed to the Royal Opera House, which had hosted every one prior to this one that I've been at).

The queue for wristbands on Saturday was cold, but fortunately they handed out the wristbands earlier than promised, and then on Sunday we were loaded into pens for the traditional multi-hour wait for it all to begin. Still, I wouldn't be anywhere else. Here's how it went down:

"What do you mean this isn't the queue for the bus? I've been here three hours!" Saturday, 11th February. The morning prior to the night subsequent and I'd made it to The Queue (now in its second street) around 7am, ultimately garnering a wristband with number 247 on it.

One day Later...

Here's the vantagepoint from my spot on the stairs (the main pen at the bottomand right seemed to be about three deep already by the time I was at the front of the bag check queue, so I took a risk and opted for a fresh pen without knowing quite where it would be).

Time passed. The sun set. It got colder. And try as I might, I still couldn't make myself like La La Land enough to hope it was going to win as many awards as it did. It was a nice movie, and all.... but come on. Not a single Bafta nomination for either of The Shallows OR Deadpool?

"I can't see a thing. Has Casey Affleck showed up yet?". No, not yet. And the Germans on the far right of my pen were going to be sad that Tom Hiddleston elected not to walk the red carpet.

"Somebody spotted a cockroach on the third floor, and I don't mind telling you : it looked fabulous". Those might not be actual Swarovski crystals embedded onto that vacuum cleaner, but even the fact that they sprung for fake ones speaks volumes for the classiness of the Baftas.

My very own phone company sponsors the Baftas. Pity they're also responsible for roughly half of all the unwanted spam messages I get on my mobile. I've asked them to block their own number on the grounds of harrassment, but I'm not sure their system allows it.

Enough pre-amble. On with the arrivals.

Our first arrival is also our host for the evening : the inimitable Stephen Fry, along with The Inimitable Stephen Fry's Bafta Suit-Jacket Pin. I really want to get one, and I don't think the Bafta gift shop sells them. (I also checked Amazon, and it thinks I might be looking for a "Bath Pin". Thanks Amazon)

I don't know who this is, but knowledgeable autograph dealers in an adjacent pen were shouting out for "Rupert" (edited to guess : Rupert Evans?)

I don't know who this is, but it's one of the few long-range shots I was able to manage while usually being distracted by things happening closer to me. In other news : it's freaking cold, and I'm wearing a lot of layers of clothing. (edited to add : Carmen Ejogo who among other things was in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)

"Sorry - can't stay : I gotta go before Emily Blunt shows up and outdoes my tiger-based top!" - I hadn't previously heard of actress Anya Taylor-Joy, but the DVD of 'The VVitch' currently sits on my Pile of Unwatched DVDs (because I have a soft spot for physical media)

I was going to mention the poor low-light quality of my Gen-3 GoPro which prevented me from using it much at this event, but I get the feeling that Viola Davis doesn't want to know about it.

Viola Davis ended up winning the Bafta for Best Supporting Actress on the night, while Dev Patel won best supporting actor. I sadly missed photographing him and I don't know why. Possibly I was distracted by Emily Blunt sometime later, but I'm not going to apologise for that.

Every year that passes is one more year between the present year and his association with the Wachowski's "Jupiter Ascending". Eddie Redmayne, along with winning an Oscar (for The Theory of Everything, not Jupiter Ascending), is most recently of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" fame.

"I've been in other movies, you know!" Daisy Risley is best known for being in the A New Hope 'homage'/rip-off The Force Awakens, which apparently did well enough to score a sequel due to be released later this year. I can't wait to see the merchandise 6mths before the movie is released. I hear Captain Phasma is going to be big. Again.

"Chivalry is dead. Guess I'll have to carry my own dress up these stairs..." I photographed Holliday Grainger (right) back at the premiere of 'Great Expectations' back in 2012 but it turns out she's done quite a lot since then. Including attend this year's Baftas.

American Comedian / Writer / Director Mel Brooks was given the Bafta Fellowship on the evening. Much as I respect his body of work, I recall watching 'Blazing Saddles' a few years ago and thinking the only funny moment in the movie was when somebody punches a horse. Which I realise says more about me than that movie.

"Not every animated movie - or indeed movie - can be The Lego Movie" - I'm glad I speculatively photographed Travis Knight - he directed Kubo and the Two Strings, which won the Bafta for Best Animated Film on the night. I didn't find it the best Laika Studios film I've seen (Boxtrolls was awesome), but it was well animated.

So... that's pretty much that. It's 2:31am right now and fortunately I don't have work tomorrow. If this journal is less funny than it might be, it's (a) because I'm tired and it's 2:32am right now, and/or (b) it's sometime after that and I still haven't written anything amusing. Still....

That makes it Bafta Wristband Number Seven..... I hear people are already camping out for next year....

That makes it Bafta Wristband Number Seven..... I hear people are already camping out for next year....

And now there's really only one thing left to do (after I drift and/or drink into the sweet oblivion of sleep):

But first, some sleep. But not before adding it to my Archive of Movie Premieres, where it can join Bafas 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

(ps : the Red Carpet / Monochrome Journal for Baftas 2017 has now been done and it's here)

Pps : If you ever want to know when I post one of these journals (specifically shorter, more to the point and occasionally with commentary made outside the limits of sleep deprivation), feel free to follow me on facebook at premieresdotco, or on twitter at berndt2_photo, or just come back here occasionally and see what's changed.

Until next time!
