23 Feb - WATCHMEN World Premiere

February 23rd, 2009

Ooh! A world Premiere - how exciting!! It means a lot more stars turning up, for one thing. And for another, it's the highly anticipated "Watchmen" - based on a graphic novel which made it onto Time Magazine's top 100 novels of all time list, has the director of the film '300' looking after it... and a Swedish actress in skin-tight latex.

So...Literary pretentions, stylised violence or hot actresses... take your pick if you want to justify going to see it! I certainly will, on the basis of all three, too! One downside : the cast is not (yet) Hollywood A-List and the movie posters all show them in costume, and I haven't read the book/novel/comic so the characters' names mean nothing to me. I'll muddle through somehow...

"This movie is not based on a comic book. It's a GRAPHIC NOVEL. That means it's Serious. How serious? Just look at my expression. That's how serious"

I'm loving these posters, but they're going to be hard to ... umm.... "liberate". That said, I've got my name on one of the posterboards...

"Watchmen", as stated, was put into Time Magazine's top 100 novels of all time. The woman in the skin tight lycra bodysuit is therefore probably a metaphor.

This is Matthew Goode, who plays the character I'm calling "Blonde-Haired Hero". IMDB calls the character 'Ozymandias'... oh, like that helps....

Owing to an oversight, I only brought one lens with me this evening, the mighty 90mm f2.8. It's not a zoom, which means I either move back (which I can't) or my lens gets real close. This is Matthew Goode. Very close to the fans.

Malin Akerman, the thinking man's Metaphor. She plays 'good looking female in lycra' on the movie poster. She's from Sweden (the actress, that is). IMDB calls her character "Silk Spectre II" (excellent - I like sequels)

This is Carla Gugino, whose character (per IMDB) is called 'Silk Spectre', but I would know better from the TV series 'Entourage', where she played recurring character Amanda Daniels in 7 episodes. (Woo!)

We made  connection! Maybe she remembers me? (or, at this distance, my lens?)

This is Jackie Earle Haley, who has been in a surprising number of television shows ranging from 'Murder She Wrote' to 'MacGyver' to 'Love Boat', 'The Waltons' and 'The Partridge Familiy'. Which makes him about 400 years old. He plays the character with an inkblot mask ('Rorschach')

This is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who looks vaguely familiar somehow. He plays the part of 'Dude with small eye-mask who smokes cigars' in the film. ('The Comedian', per IMDB). Alternatively, Robert Downey Jnr is taking his next role really seriously and is method acting.... as another actor entirely. Damn, that guy is commited to his job.

British television and radio presenter Jonathan Ross, recently newly returned from a BBC suspension for prank calling the star of Fawlty Towers about his granddaughter. His connection with the film appears more nebulous.

But let's not lose sight of Malin Ackerman, as the famous saying "Let's Not Lose Sight Of Malin Ackerman" goes.

Zack Snyder, director of '300' and now 'Watchmen'. He's the only person in this film I'd definitely heard of going to the premiere, but i'll admit I had no firm idea until I checked the net what he looked like.

The lineup of Usual Suspects answering, I assume, the usual questions. You know, what was the director like, what were the costumes like, what was it like acting in front of greenscreen, did you know you owe that guy over there $5?

"This metaphor is feeling pretty cold. It's winter in London, and you'll notice all the guys are wearing suits." I... hadn't noticed what the guys were wearing, if I'm honest.

In... uh... honour of the movie 'The Duchess' which picked up the Academy Award for Best Costume at today's Academy Awards in LA, here is the dress worn by Malin Akerman. It's also a higher-rez shot than the others in this series. What? I like good costuming 8)

....and then, for no reason I can easily fathom, Ricky Yune from 'Fast and the Furious' turned up.

He's a Guy and he wears a Yellow Cap. That's why he's called Yellow Cap Guy, and for tonight he got himself pole position, and look: a celebrity to pose with. Once again, well played, sir.

He's Patrick Wilson, and he plays the dude who looks like 'Batman-Man' on the poster. (Nite-Owl)

My mistake... he's Nite Owl II (you can tell it's a serious work of literary fiction when it spells "Night" as "Nite" and has its own internal sequel.

Originally considered 'unimportant' (or perhaps merely 'unidentified'), the tie-less man in the white shirt is almost certainly Billy Crudup, who plays the blue-skinned "Dr Manhattan" in the film.

As for this man? I have no idea who he, nor his hairdresser, is.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan's PA points to the entrance and (twenty minutes later) exit to the Odeon Leicester Square. Many people don't realise that it's quite rare for celebrities to watch the movie they're at the Premiere for. Because, like, they've got afterparties to see and Berlin to fly to.

And... Oh, look. My camera just happened to point in Malin Ackerman's direction again. (My camera appears to have a 'priority mode' beyond mere aperture, shutter, and ISO)

That was actually a very 'rewarding' premiere - just about the whole cast showed up, and they were really, really friendly, happy to sign autographs and the crowd was particularly well-behaved. I'm looking forward to the movie, when it comes out. Until then, I have a 'Watchmen' poster I liberated from the Premiere to decorate my place with.

The next scheduled premiere is 'Duplicity' on 19th March, but there are counter-rumours of 'lots' of premieres in March. Who is right and who is wrong? I'll find out eventually, I hope!

Until next time!
