18 Mar - The Damned United premiere

March 18th, 2009.

Summary : It's a movie about soccer (the locals call it 'football') and up until about 24 hours earlier I assumed it had to do with Manchester United. This wasn't the case (it's Leeds United) but to be frank that made little difference - I'd show up if I had nothing better to do, which in this case was the case since I had leftovers in the fridge!

This premiere wasn't one I had particularly bold ambitions for, which was good because the one actor I wanted to show up (Colm Meaney) didn't, and two actors who weren't in the film I wasn't in a position to photograph (Battlestar Galactica's Jamie Bamber and Harry Potter's Emma Watson). Never mind..

Michael Sheen plays the lead character in this film (I don't know who that is), and the character of Prime Minster Tony Blair in the film 'The Queen'

A man with a tie like that is entitled to a satisfied smile.

He's some kind of famous soccer (all right, 'football') commentator who plays himself in the movie. Wireimage has proven unhelpful, so I'm going to declare that he's former James Bond actor George Lazenby.

George Lazenby? He's no Pierce Brosnan, but then the sample size we're talking is fairly small". Fair point.

Actor Jim Broadbent won a best supporting actor Oscar for 'Iris' in 2002, played Harold Ziedler in Moulin Rouge, will be in upcoming Harry Potter movies, played Renee Zellwegger's Dad in the Bridget Jones films and was in the most recent Indiana Jones film. Why can't I recognise him from anything other than attendances in other movie premieres been to??

This i Director Tom Hooper. Per IMDB, he's mostly done television work prior to this. I have a TV license (as required by British law) but I can't say I've seen any of his stuff (unless it's uncredited work on The Amazing Race, America's Next Top Model or Scrubs)

This is Writer / Producer Peter Morgan who also alternatively wrote/produced 'The Queen', 'The Last King of Scotland', 'The Other Boleyn Girl' and 'Frost / Nixon'. And that nonchalant eye-brow raise : I want that!!!

If you'd said Timothy Spall would be attending tonight's premiere I probably wouldn't have reacted. However if you'd said "Wormtail from Harry Potter" was coming I would have... well I would have come anyway. I'm kind of like that.

"Voldermort? Never heard of him. Also, you're not supposed to mention his name. Next question?"

Michael Parkinson was a current affair show host for a discontinuous period of some 25 years from the early seventies to about two years ago. Along with being awarded a CBE, he also seems to be an adept Moonwalker (or those are somebody else's trousers alongside him)

There was a time when the absence of Yellow Cap Guy from a premiere would cause me to worry. Now it simply makes me wonder what he knows that I don't. (He wasn't at this premiere....)

Either it's actor Martin Crompston (whom I've never heard of), or wireimage.com is calling two actors by the same name (neither of whom I've heard of). Either way... this is some guy. Possibly Martin Crompston. Probably not George Lazenby.

Yeah, that's Wormtail all right. Eek! Makes me feel like I should jump onto a stool and grab a broom. (No offense to Tim Spall.. he's a great actor)

And finally, composition through crooked arm of Pap. Hey, I'll take my angles wherever I can find them. Also : I have no idea who either of these two people are, and I'm all out of George Lazenby candidates. (Edited to add, five years later : he's probably Rafe Spall, son of Tim Spall... he's an actor too)

This premiere was a bit quieter than others. There's another one scheduled tomorrow, and next week the number has been officially decreased from 4 scheduled to 3 scheduled. Woohoo! It's like time off for good behaviour!

Until Next time!
