23 Mar - The Boat that Rocked premiere

March 23rd, 2009

For this premiere, I didn't just see Yellow Cap Guy, I was actually right NEXT to him. I even learned that he has a first name! However, I'm making the executive call that to reveal it would be to diminish his awesomeness. So I won't.

Also, intriguingly, this movie is/was called "Pirate Radio" for its American release

The movie has a massive ensemble cast, however the three actors I most wanted to photograph on acting grounds a) didn't attend (Philip Seymour-Hoffman, Emma Thompson) or b) slipped by me surreptitiously while I was distracted (Kenneth Brannagh). Argh.

The organisers for the London Marathon were desperate to increase television ratings... and for what it was worth I felt their idea had merit.

Rhys Ifans. No idea what he's been in, but genuine or otherwise the crocodile skin jacket he's wearing is pretty fab. Ditto the company he keeps.

I don't care if wireimage has two galleries of some 200 shots for this premiere and this guy doesn't show up.. you simply CAN'T have a hairstyle like that and a smoking jacket like that and NOT be famous. (Am I right?)

Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz How to Lose friends etc... and a minor role in Mission Impossible III) dropped by to support his friend Nick Frost at the premiere. And since I'd snapped him at various premieres before, I made the rare call to attempt to get his autograph if the opportunity presented itself.

Maybe I'm getting better at this : I recognise this star : she's Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman!! (right... that's just a character. Jane Seymour?)

Meanwhile, here's upwards of one-sixth of the face of actor (and occasionally director) Kenneth Branagh!

Gemma Arterton wisely decides the risk of frostbite is too great and heads into the cinema (I was wearing a double-beanie, t-shirt, jumper, jacket and trousers and I certainly wasn't feeling warm)

It's Nick Frost!! I was pleased to get his signature on the same blank page of my travel journal as Simon Pegg's. Bonus!

In a pretty MAJOR note of noteworthiness, Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney breezes past. In the immortal question 'Beatles or Elvis?' I actually prefer Elvis, but he's fairly tricky to photograph...

Ex-Spice Girl Gerry Halliwell (I don't know which one... not Sporty or Scary or Posh, so that leaves two) tries to steal Paul McCartney's thunder... the question of Beatles vs Elvis vs Spice Girls is perhaps much more divisive.

Meanwhile, to my right, actor Bill Nighy reacts with appropriate confusion and reverence at being so close to the legendary Yellow Cap Guy.

This photo of director Richard Curtis (who also wrote and directed 'Love Actually' as well as having numerous writing credits) is fairly cool in its own right, but the lady having a pseudo-religious experience on the red carpet to his right kind of wins it for me. (she didn't actually fall, she just kind of... leaned...)

I was cold but after I went for a McDonald's dinner I decided to return and see if I could get any worthy shots. This photo, of the former red carpet area now turned into a parking lot for the stars' cars and drivers, kind of qualifies.

Here's a quick snap of actress Talulah Riley before heading home to the relative warmth of my apartment (wait that came out wrong. I went to my apartment, she went to wherever she went to).

Anyway, I'd suffered through an additional hour or more of Yellow Cap Guy's ongoing train-of-thought habit of soliloquising (?) to get this shot. Worth it? Hard to say.

Not a bad one, all up. There are two more premieres this week, but I've got a social engagement at the same time as one, and a fear of tens of thousands of screaming teenage girls to contend with for the other one. We shall see.

Until next time!
