4 Nov - 'Mockingjay2 : Die Tribute von Panem' - Die Weltpremiere, Berlin

November 4th, 2015.

Guten Tag from Berlin, Germany. And even I can't believe that somehow I thought it would be a good idea to take a holiday to Germany to coincide with a premiere London is getting one day later. But London's is a London premiere.... whereas Berlin's is the World Premiere.

Hier Ist how it went down (in English):

If that's a piece of the Berlin Wall, then I'm definitely not in Kansas... or Leicester Square anymore (also : LOL- 'Next Wall To Fall : Wall Street' quote at the bottom)

Berlin hosts its premieres at the Sony Center in Potsdamer Platz. I also checked around : the restaurants overlooking premieres tend to be booked solid within 1-2 weeks of large premieres being announced. They're clever, these Germans...

Door sign, Starbucks Potsdamer Platz. Don't ever let anyone tell you Germans don't have a sense of humour, either! :)

Apparently both in theory and in practice this is a legitimate place to watch the premiere : the second floor of the Starbucks in the Sony Center. However firstly I don't relish spending the next (checks watch) 10 hours in this chair; and secondly I'd guess that the interior lights would reflect off the windows a bit too much and affect my photography. Plus likelihood of autographs would be minimal, unless Jennifer Lawrence also feels like a mocha or something before getting onstage.

I've found my spot on the left of the stage, and now I get to spend the next (checks watch) 9 hours wondering whether that's the side people will be interviewed facing.

As with the Spectre premiere, I couldn't NOT afterwards draw a map of the premiere and my approximate location. In drawing it afterwards, my memory let me down so much that it completely escaped my notice / recollection that the buildings have a curved shape all the way around (ie. bottom left is entirely wrong)

Hours, hours (and hours) pass, and so do various accumulated podcasts, half of a movie I've got on my iPod, a toilet break, a lunchbreak, another quick check to see whether Starbucks *really* might not be such a bad place to be.... and a return for a few more hours (and hours) and hours.... and then about an hour after the 16:30 starttime.... we're told it'll be starting in about 20mins.

I'm given to understand this was either *The Winner*, or perhaps merely a heats winner of 'The Voice Germany' - she sang 'The Hanging Tree' in her audition, and again today.

This is our host for the evening, and based on the raucous screams of the crowd near me, he might be about the same level of stardom as Tom Cruise and George Clooney combined? On the assumption that's actually the case I've decided to track down the 'a' with an umlaut so I can accurately spell his name : he's Steven Gätjen. And to reiterate : the people around me LOVE this Steven person.

Even more than a warm elevated seated shooting platform of, say, the now-packed for hours Starbucks second floor... as a photographer I prefer angles. Meanwhile, all the girls around me are in their late teens, very early twenties, have boyfriends, or are looking at my all 'what the hell are you doing here?' and they're wondering it in German, which is disarming.

And then... wow... finally... it's started!

Our first arrival is Willow Shields, who plays Jennifer Lawrence's sister Prim in the movie. In other news... why is my camera fixated on those railing? And additionally, who put the railings at EYE LEVEL of the arriving cast??

This 'shoot through the railings' strategy is looking like one of my less inspired ideas. On the slightly-not-as-hypothermic side, though - fortunately once the crowd REALLY got crowded (about two hours ago) and pushed and got excited at the prospect of 'Steven' (and all the other arrivals), my thermal jumper wasn't as required as it had been over the prior hours.

"This dude says his name's 'Lawrence' but he's... uh.... a DUDE?". Francis Lawrence directed this movie, and its predecessor. I do not believe he's a relation of Jennifer's

"If they want to reboot the series... I'm totally up for it. In fact, let's be really bold and recast the reboot WITH THE SAME CAST AGAIN". Hollywood totally needs to start doing this.... and is probably already working on doing this.

"So are you saying that they shot multiple endings and you're not actually sure what happens to your character??" Those books have been out for a while. I read the third one at a bar in Singapore (true story) - 35 degrees celsius and 100 percent humidity, but the bar was air-conditioned, the view was spectacular, and the cocktails were delicious. (AND I'm STILL single...)

"Is this the right part of the crowd?". Inasmuch as the Germans around me were all pleasant, polite, civilised and here for all the right reasons, they were also pretty single-minded about stomping over you, me, and your grandma for the right autograph (in a pleasant, polite and civilised way). And we're talking Julianne Moore, here- you should have heard the screams for Josh Hutcherson. And he hasn't even ARRIVED yet.

"And you're sure that's were the screams are loudest? Okay....". Next arrival to be interviewed : Sam Claflin, who I've photographed best at premieres like "Catching Fire" and "The Quiet Ones"

"I'm in Germany and they're saying they love me!!" And they're saying it in English. Germans are quite adaptible that way.

"I just want to say I loved you in the 'Pitch Perfect' movies. Also.. if you see my wife please DON'T tell her that I've watched the 'Pitch Perfect' movies" . Next up (almost) on stage.... Elizabeth Banks.

Best known for playing Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones (in my world, that is... according to imdb it was for being in Ron Howard's 'Rush') - it's Natalie Dormer!

It's only the extremes of the multicoloured static in the background that prevents me from showing Natalie Dormer's geometrically precise dress. That, and the increased shoving from three of the four sides of the crowd I'm edged against. Both Donald Sutherland and Elizabeth Banks are signing autographs and approaching from separate angles, and I'm kind of alarmed.

If your eardrums are currently punctured... good news, you avoided having them punctured even sooner by attending this premiere. To put it another way.... Jennifer Lawrence has arrived.

"I don't see the words 'hunger' or 'games' anywhere. Are we sure we're in the right place?" Stanley Tucci plays the awesomely over-dressed, over-dyed and smelling-of-flowers Caesar Flickerman in the series.

"No, the Oscar Nomination wasn't for Transformers : Age of Extinction... but thanks for remembering I have been nominated" - it was for 'The Lovely Bones (2009)' whose premiere he sadly did not attend.

Jennifer Lawrence has finished signing autographs in the large arc of people diagonally opposite us, and I fear for my safety if she decides to even suggest she might sign where we are.  I began this premierein the second row of the pen, and now I'm second-and-a-half row... and the two people who used to be in front of me have BOTH shifted MORE than one person away from me....

And then all of a sudden, Ro-Laren-turned-Helena-Cain showed up. Michelle Forbes is in this film, and having gone from Ensign in Star Trek TNG to Admiral in Battlestar Galactica, a role as anything less than Commander-in-Chief in this film would be kind of a demotion for her.

Please don't tell any of the girls around me that Josh Hutcherson is in visual range... all my best photos of this premiere have been taken when people with mobile phones don't have the range.

This photo was taken from the middle of a war zone whereby I was pushed, jostled and barged as Josh Hutcherson approached our area. I don't think he signed autographs.... or if he did I might need to account for a missing ten minutes of consciousness.

"What up, guys? yes, this dress is precisely as inappropriate for the climate as it looks". I'd offer Jennifer Lawrence any combination of my jacket, jumper or beanie, but my position in the crowd is locked to the point where I can't actually have my camera around my neck anymore, or reach my GoPro. Or feel my legs. Or breathe easily.

Not the world's best photograph of Jena Malone, I'll admit. However it does bring the total number of cameras I've used at this premiere to FOUR. Only two of which I've been able to reliably access at any given time, mind you. And one of them took about 95% of all the photos.

Interesting news from the warzone. German girls overwhelmingly appear to prefer Peeta to the more rugged Gale. This is good news for me as I am anything but Gale-like.... and bad news insofar as I don't actually live in Germany.

I know I've claimed an undeniable connection between myself and Kate Winslet in the past, however I'd also like to suggest increasing evidence that a similar connection may exist between Jennifer Lawrence and I (refer : the 2013 Baftas for instance, or the Hunger Games Catching Fire premiere) ... although I'd add that this shouldn't make me seem out of reach of the average rich, famous, attractive and award winning female that comes across me.

And at about this point things became so chaotic in my pen that I concluded discretion was the better part of valour, or alternatively that cowardice is a great way to not just survive but avoid The Hunger Games. However, two more shots:

A big thanks to Berlin for demonstrating that it's a definite rival to putting on World Premieres.. it's my second in just 9 days and this was certainly a rival for London's world premiere for the latest James Bond movie 'Spectre'

So... that was pretty great. Not sure I'll be trekking off to Germany for premieres often, but it was a great thing to do at least this once!

Oh, and you'd better believe it goes into My Archive of Movie Premieres where it joins ALL THE HUNGER GAMES premieres (I actually managed to make it to each premiere since the very first in 2012):

1. Click here for The Hunger Games (2012)
2. Click here for The Hunger Games : Catching Fire (2013) (my favourite)
3. Click here for The Hunger Games : Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) (the one that almost destroyed me)
4. And click.... well... here for this one, obviously!

I'm off to enjoy Deutschland, now.

Until next time!
