11 Jul - The 'Jason Bourne' European Premiere

July 11th, 2016.

Just one day ago I was right here in Leicester Square, coming in on my day off on a Sunday to photograph Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi at the "Finding Dory" premiere. That was the sequel to Finding Nemo. This however, is the fourth Bourne Film (the other one doesn't count) while tomorrow, if all goes well I'll be going from a second instalment to a fourth instalment to a THIRD - for Star Trek Beyond. But that's (hopefully) tomorrow.

For today, here's how it went down:

The towering edifice of the Odeon Leicester Square pays host to a movie whose three predecessors (the Jeremy Renner 'attempt', while valiant, doesn't really count) were all excellent films. No pressure, then...

Pretty sure they used that same tag-line for a James Bond promo? But then both are spies and both have the same initials. We're basically talking a shared universe, here.

Arguably the most important attendee at this premiere wasn't even announced - Kathleen Kenndy is the highest-grossing producer in cinematic history, and her imdb.com entry here is basically a list of many of my favourite movies released in the past three or four decades. And also Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Julia Stiles has had a role in all four (wait... five? no, four) Matt Damon / Jason Bourne films, and I've never photographed her. AND I've photographed her smiling. That doesn't seem to happen all that much (personally I find that endearing)

"I like that tie so much I'm willing to mug a man on stage to get it..." - Frank Marshall is one of EIGHT producers of this film, and the total number of producing credits in imdb exceeds even Kathleen Kennedy's.... although she outpaces him in Oscar nominations 8 - 5. I'm sure it's something she brings up at every opportunity (I would).

Stanley Tucci is not actually in this film, but I think he's great. Personally I hope he's he next Batman after Ben Affleck, or that his character Cesar Flickerman from The Hunger Games gets his own gritty spin-off movie some day.

If this is Chris Carreras, he's the movie's First Assistant Director. And that woman's face in the foreground is very large. Or it's forced perspective... I'm not sure what the Nikon was doing in this shot.

"Please welcome him on stage : the director and my personal inspiration for how I want my hair to look when I'm his age... Paul Greengrass!!!" It's too late for me, hair-wise, but I can echo the sentiment anyway.

Paul Greengrass's outstanding directorial credits include the prior two Matt Damon Bourne films, the sadly disregarded The Green Zone and the exellent Captain Phillips. Also, while I personally too subscribe to the no tie' philosophy, I don't quite have the confidence (or failing that chunky gold medallion necklace) to have quite this many buttons unbuttoned.

The tribulations of getting a good photo of Julia Stiles continue, as I take to having to shoot between bald heads for this photo (or maybe it's one very deformed head... I was too busy being frustrated to notice the details)

"You want me to sign what for who? But I don't know that person and I'm not even sure I've watched that movie...."

"Quick, get onto imdb and tell me which movies I'm meant to be complimenting her on. Are you SURE she was in Silver Linings Playbook??"

"Legends tell of her beguillingly beautiful smile, but the photographic record on that is sketchy at best. It's JULIA STILES!!!"

In my opinion, Alicia Vikander was great in the excellent Ex Machina (2015), was very pretty in the sub-optimal The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) and was at the premiere of The Danish Girl (also 2015). She's also in this movie.

"I can't give you a hug, but I can give you an air-high-five?"

"I think she's stunning, but I also think she's too busy staring at the fast-approaching Matt Damon to notice me or any of you other guys out there : here's ALICIA VIKANDER!!"

If an Alicia Vikander air high-five and a quarter-smile from Julia Stiles is what I'm getting from this premiere, I might not need the solemn Matt Damon fist-bump I'd come to this premiere hoping for.

"I'm actually pretty happy with my long distance mobile plan, but thanks for asking anyway" - Matt Damon was first to arrive and start signing and posing for selfies and he's the last one heading to the stage to be interviewed.

"You remember me from Happy Feet 2? That's great" - Matt Damon and Brad Pitt as Bill and Will the Krill (respectively) were the highlight for me in that movie, which i only recently got around to watching after attending the premiere way back in 2011.

"You want me to sign a POTATO? Yeah... okay. I see what you're doing there..." - Matt Damon was excellent as a botanist on Mars in "The Martian" (2015), and I've also photoraphed him at premieres as diverse as "The Monuments Men" in 2014 and "Invictus" in 2010

Riz Ahmed was in the fantastic "Nightcrawler" and he was very good in (and I photographed him at the premiere of) the tricky-to-write-unambiguously "Ill Manors" in 2012.

"It's been five minutes, and that was stanza eight of my epic Ode To The Greatness Of Matt Damon . There's twelve more stanzas to go....but I ain't going nowhere, and I doubt he is either as he's far too polite"

"Thanks for sticking with me through all the difficult times, up to and including what we all went through just then. Bless you all, guys"

So... that was rather enjoyable, actually, notwithstanding the crowds and the pushing and the occasional rain before it started. It's premiere number 2 of 3 in 3 days, starting with yesterday's "Finding Dory" and (hopefully) ending with tomorrow's "Star Trek Beyond". All good for the "Archive of Movie Premieres"

Until next time, then!
