15 Sep - The 'Beatles : Eight Days A Week' World Premiere

September 15, 2016.

It's been two days since my last premiere, the small but noteworthily attended "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" featuring Sam Neill and Liam Neeson. However, whereas that was at the diminutive Picturehouse Central, this premiere was at Leicester Square. And not just the Odeon there, but the entire centre of the square itself. And why? Beatles Concert Movie World Premiere.

Here's how it went down:

"He's just sniffing for any Rolling Stones fans who might be hanging around"

"That's my cousin Benny from back in Bangladesh. But he bears an uncanny resemblance, no?"

The buildup continues, and the smart money's suggesting that Leicester Square mainstay Mr Impact and his tame DJ Abbey Road might not be required to unleash their Phat Beatz to accompany the sounds of the Fab Four and give away freeness at this premiere.

"We can sign autographs for you, if you want?" No, but I'll take the name of your barber, if you want. That hairstyle could totally make a comeback.

I'm not entirely sure why Bob Geldof is heading straight for me, but if he wants to mug me for my weekly train ticket on the Govia Thameslink line, he's welcome to it. I can't guarantee there'll be any trains running on that line... but then again, neither can f**king Govia.

I don't know who this is, but there was a brief flurry of excitement at the Paparazzi pen to the left of me and the fans across from me. And to be sure, with Fashion Week II about to get started it's anyone's guess whether blue jackets and tieless black shirts are this year's baggy pants and shoulder pads.

Random attendee : Madonna! (I last photographed her at the premiere of the movie "W.E." which she directed back in 2012). The tourists to my right were totally flummoxed at the attendees this premiere was generating. I'm just stoked the Nikon's autofocus is pretty sweet at this distance..

While the tourists to my left were overjoyed at the random famous people getting out of cars and walking the carpet, the woman on the far right of this photo? Much less impressed.

"Didn't you see that youtube clip? It said it so much better than I could. Even though it was me who said it" - bottom line, Ringo Starr strongly prefers not to sign autographs for fans anymore.

"... and I want a RECEIPT!!"

"... and I want a RECEIPT!!"

So... that was rather large and impressive. The last concert / documentary premiere I was at was for The Rolling Stones' Crossfire Hurricane back in 2012 which all the 'Stones attended had more bandmembers but took up less space. And if I'm really lucky these photos will have a hell of a lot less DMCA takedown notices than the Rolling Stones' laywers burped out.

Still... it's another one for The Archive of Movie Premieres, with hopefully more to come after yet another hopefully brief hiatus puts me out of circulation for a little while.

Until next time!

13 Sep - The 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' premiere

September 13th, 2016.

It's been a few weeks since my last "premiere", that for Final Fantasy XV Kingsglaive, and much longer since the premiere before that, for Suicide Squad in early August. But I'm back, for however brief that might be, and though I'm out of practice for this kind of thing, I did remember to bring my camera and make sure the batteries were charged..

Here's how it went down:

The venue for this premiere : Picturehouse Central, with its cool lighting, streetside aspect, and enough room for you and all your favourite friends from the Autograph Dealer community. Assuming you don't have that many friends from that community.

This movie was directed by Taika Waititi, who is off busily directing Marvel's THOR : RAGNAROK in Australia. He also directed the movie "Eagle vs Shark" which I thought was brilliant, as well as "What we do in the Shadows" which seemingly everybody but me thought was brilliant. And they remembered to give the film a logo, which is nice.

In contrast to other premieres at Picturehouse Central (including the shortest ever recorded, for "The Neon Demon" earlier this year ), for this one they not only had a red carpet, but they even had an outdoor paparazzi pen!

The ratio of people here for the premiere so far is skewed towards a ratio of 1 Crew for every 1 Autograph Dealer and 0 of anyone else, but that's in part because I'm sitting inside at the cafe for now, enjoying quite a nice mocha. The Picturehouse's peach green tea 'brownie' could stand to reduce its fairly devastating sugar content, but it's nice too in case you're interested..

Eventually I headed outside, and.... I don't want to panic anybody, but it's been so long since my last premiere that this is kind of what my level of comfort with my equipment is like right now.

My position for the moment is pretty frikkin' amazing, but as I'm not a recognised professional photographer the likelihood I'll be able to keep it once this thing starts is about zero.

There was an Attendees List for this event, but the authorised photographers were guarding it fairly jealously. I'd like to think that's because premieres.co's website's global reach is now sufficient for what I represent to be both respected and feared. (woohoo!!)

This is the first event I've photographed Sam Neill at, and between him, and photographing Jeff Goldblum for the first time (at the Independence Day Resurgence Train Unveiling ) and director Steven Spielberg (at the premiere of The BFG ), it's been a big year for Jurassic Park alumni. I'd trade them all for composer John Williams, though...

"I didn't say they looked like Turkeys, I just said they didn't look particularly scary" - Julian Dennison appears to have survived the autograph dealers who swamped Sam Neill when he first arrived, and are salaciously eyeing him right now.

Random arrival, and still possibly sporting the toothpick he rocked at the Wrath Of The Titans premiere lo those years ago, it's Liam Neeson! He's not in the movie, but he was pretty convincingly intimidating in the 'Taken' films it's probably not worth restricting his access..

So.... that was that. And as the countdown to BFI London Film Festival continues unabated, there might still be one or two premieres to go before then. For now, though, it's another premiere for The Archive of Movie premieres, now over 350+ in length.

Until next time!
