5 Oct - the BFI LFF 'Mudbound' Premiere

October 5th, 2017.

It's either day 2 or 3 of BFI London Film Festival (depending on whether you count from Tuesday's 'BFI Luminous Gala', or yesterday's 'Breathe' Opening Gala) - and today while the enigmatic Jake Gyllenhall either was or wasn't attending (or was or wasn't looking left or right) the premiere of 'Stronger' at the Picturehouse, I decided to claim my spot at Odeon Leicester Square for the premiere of 'Mudbound'.

Here's how it went down:

A crisp new red carpet, and for the moment I have a front row spot upon it.

What sucks is that although I operate a website that achieves all the staggering social momentum that upwards of a dozen viewers (sometimes weekly) can generate (and those are the coolest people on the planet, right?), I still don't get access to a pen for social influencers. Right now my biggest consolation is that the pen for Social Influencers mis-spells the word 'Influencers'...

"I don't know who any of these people are..." "Carey Mulligan won a Bafta and was nominated for an Oscar for 'An Education' " "Is that like the awards for best blog and best podcast but not online?" "You know, you millennials really piss me off..."

These are four of the producers of the film, three of them facing forward. (I'm trying to put more factual content into my comments....)

"Not only have they now spelled 'influencers' correctly, but together we're a powerhouse block of three!". Damnit... how can there be THREE people more influential than I am? I went to the premieres of not one but TWO DIVERGENT movies, damnit!!

My spot in the front row of my public pen is highly susceptible to having views blocked from people within the pen as well as the world's tallest (and most likely to stand in the path of photographers) security guard. This is one of only two photos of director Dee Rees

Jason Mitchell played the part of Eazy-E in 'Straight Outta Compton' - one of the movies I enjoyed so much that I decided to set up a 'quotes for the poster' section on this website in the hope that one day something I write graces the cover of a DVD or movie poster. They probably won't use my quotes for Batman v Superman or The Force Awakens, though....

As noted above, Carey Mulligan was in (and excellent in) 'An Education' which I recommend as the closest emotional equivalent to a women's version of Terminator2 : Judgement Day (feel free to put that on the DVD). Plus she was in 'Drive' with Ryan Gosling.

"It was a price worth paying, that's all I'm going to say" - Jason Clarke is, according to imdb.com NOT best known for being in the cinematic abomination that was 2015's Tyrmynytr Gynysys - it's not even in his top 4 places (Zero Dark Thirty, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Everest and The Great Gatsby are).

" 'Young Cop' in TWILIGHT?? They swore my cheque to suppress that one had cleared!!" - Jason Clarke's filmography makes for some remarkable reading....

Garrett Hedlund, meanwhile, is also in this movie. I last photographed him at the premiere of 'Pan' in 2015, which despite starring such luminaries as Hugh Jackman and Cara Delevingne, never made it to sequel, let alone Full Franchise... and he was also the lead in Tron : Legacy which despite being a really good movie incredibly never made it to a sequel either.

"Sign it on a dare? Hell... I'd sign it anyway!" please let it be a petition to remove the morons at Govia from the Thameslink rail franchise. Because petitions against powerful, wealthy and incompetent franchise operators *TOTALLY* work, while threats of violence don't.

Sadly despite my best attempts to appear Streetzwize over the course of many years and several hundred journals on this website, my knowledge of the cultural importance of Mary J Blige is sadly omewhat minimal.....

"Didn't you do a rendition of 'Family Affair' at a corporate drinks once?" Those rumours are utter lies. And that footage was destroyed.

In lieu of getting a non-blurry photo of Carey Mulligan where she's actually looking vaguely in my direction, this is easily my favourite photo from the premiere so far. (and rather uniquely I knew as soon as I shot the burst from my camera that it would be)

"Michael Sheen was in TWILIGHT??". And Tron:Legacy

At this point in the proceedings, it became very evident that all the action was taking place out of reach of our field of view, so we went our various directions homebound. However, under the impression I never actually got a decent-enough photo of Carey Mulligan I hung back to see if there were any photos to be taken from within Leicester Square ITSELF - outside the premiere (desperate times, you understand...)

Carey Mulligan among a swarm of autograph dealers. (Don't send sympathetic facebook likes or retweets : do something more likely to result in change : write to your congressman or change your profile picture or something...)

"Does this count as a good photo?" by the standards of THIS premiere? probably.

Well... Blurry Therefore Art, I always say.

So... that was that. Fairly hard work (if this counts as 'work' and not some insane thing I do in my spare time that doesn't amount to so much as a spot in a 'social influencers' miniature pen) for some kind of output. And/but there's still ten days of BFI London Film Festival to go!

Until next time (ie. Tomorrow)!

ps. if you ever want to know when I post one of these journals feel free to follow me on facebook at premieresdotco, or on twitter at berndt2_photo ... or just come back tomorrow, I guess!

pps. If you want to know what a Twilight Premiere was like to attend, try Here or Here. Or just check out some of the weirdness in the Archive of Movie premieres.
