14 Oct - The BFI LFF 'You Were Never Really Here' Premiere

October 14th, 2017.

It's the penultimate day of BFI London Film Festival 2017, and it involved both a premiere and the BFI Awards, held elsewhere a short distance away. The premiere was fairly small... probably a good thing in light of the size of tomorrow's potential for disappointment if all goes wrong. But that's tomorrow, a whole day (and possibly a good night's sleep) away.

Here's how this went down:

Consistent Branding. So Important. (I should probably figure out which one out of @Berndt2_photo, premieresdotco, premieres.co and bernd-talasch.com I actually am at this point).

It's so ON right now. (The buildup for this premiere was very slow : among other things there was no media pen, meaning no interviews, meaning the star(s) didn't have to arrive early to leave enough time for interview commitments.

Despite the movie's title being "You Were Never Really Here", it does not appear to be a sequel or in any way related to the movie "I'm Still Here", also starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Despite having three Oscar Nominations for acting (Gladiator, Walk The Line, and The Master) there was a disappointing number of people in the crowd with seemingly no idea who Joaquin Phoenix was. I mean.... Gladiator? You haven't heard of GLADIATOR?? (Joaquin Phoenix was fantastic in the movie 'Her' as well)

So... that was another premiere, and tomorrow will see the end of BFI London Film Festival for 2017 and hopefully I'll be able to photograph 100% of Peter Dinklage, Woody Harrelson, Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell..... ALL of whom are expected and NONE of whom I've previously photographed.

.... I'd better recheck my batteries and memory cards!

Until Next Time One More Time!!

13 Oct - The BFI LFF 'The Florida Project' Premiere

Friday 13th October, 2017 (part II)...

Having pretty much uploaded an edited journal in about 100mins for the 'Downsizing' Gala with Alexander Payne and Christoph Waltz by returning to the office instead of going home, I was well-placed to return to Leicester Square for a SECOND premiere for the evening, one for which a random person at 'Downsizing' had assured me Willem Dafoe would attend.

Here's how it went down:

The setup for this premiere started as they were still putting together the carpet for the prior premiere, for 'Downsizing', sadly not attended by Matt Damon or Kristen Wiig - but then Christoph Waltz and Alexander Payne (who did attend) have FOUR Oscars between them.

About four hours and a full premiere (and a brief respite back at The Office)

The majority of the crowd (dealer- and non-dealer) were here hoping to see actor Willem Dafoe, who was certainly on "The List" of stars... however the letters "TBC" next to his name might have spelled out the Tequila, Beer and Cointreau in the hotel bar he preferred to imbibe rather than attend. Fortunately I photographed him at "John Carter" (of Mars) back in 2012.

I'm sorry... I'm also running customer help at Squarespace which keeps crashing uploads. But vaccuming this fresh carpet is clearly more important.

So.. that was a premiere just like the other one before it was. There's still two days of BFI London Film Festival 2017 left to go, and I'm hoping to make it out to both days (especially Sunday), after which I'm hoping to start getting decent sleep and giving all the indication of being a normal, stable, reliable person who doesn't do this for two weeks like there's somehow money or fame or even the odd facebook like to be earned. But still...

Until next time!

Finally, go FUCK yourself, Squarespace because this is the second FUCKING journal in a row that's simply crashed/ claimed I've logged out, causing me to lose work and waste time in recovering what I've written, and having formats change on my via copy-pasting. Do your FUCKING JOB, SQUARESPACE.

12 Oct - The BFI LFF 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' Premiere

October 12th, 2017.

It's come to the point where, after 11 consecutive days of events (9 of them also workdays), I've almost hit a wall whereby my decision making processes are suspect and I'm relying basically on mathematics to get premieres done. That maths is 10 frames per second : the framerate of The Nikon. At this premiere, my failure rate was very bad... but 10 frames per second can cover many ills, or so I continue to hope.

Here's how this one went down:

Two years ago, I watched 'The Lobster' by the same director as 'The Killing Of A Sacred Deer' based purely on how cool the movie poster looked, and it was one of the most startling movies I've ever seen. This poster... is another GREAT poster. (Can't wait to see the movie!)

"I'd kill for hair like that guy's.... just not in that colour" - BFI London Film Festival hits day 8 (wait... 9??) and I've found myself in a spot in the pen usually taken up by Autograph Dealers. I don't know why they didn't fight for it like they usually do... by which I mean : what is it that they know that I don't?

Yorgos Lanthimos (aka 'Giorgos Lanthimos') is the director of this movie - and also the fantastic 'The Lobster' , and the quirky earlier movie 'Dogtooth'

Despite the blur (which I'm hoping just sneaks into the definition of 'blurry therefore art'), this is probably the best photo of YorgosLanthimos I've taken across two different BFI London Film Festivals.

The lovely Raffey Cassidy, who I photographed first at the premiere of the underrated "Tomorrowland" , and last year at the premiere of Robert Zemeckis' "Allied" is also in this movie (and her dress is exceedingly handy at using as the basis for my cameras' autofocus!)

Arriving moments later, Australia's own Nicole Kidman - who I last photographed at the premiere of 'Paddington' , and have long since given up trying to get her to sign my photo of her taken in 2008 at the premiere of the movie 'Australia'. In part because I keep forgetting to bring that photo with me, I suspect.

After yesterday's pretty decent lens-flare effort at 'Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool' , I think I'm back to a level of form I haven't been in since I put a 50mm 1.4 on a Nikon D700 years ago.....

Long-range Nicole Kidman shot - at the distance I was photographing it was pretty much all luck as security and photographer/videographers on the carpet blocked her as much as photogaphers, selfie-hunters, and autograph dealers did in the pen. But sometimes you get a few fractions of a second to take shots like this

Random Attendee #2 : Nicholas Hoult - best known (probabyly) for being in the awesome Mad Max Fury Road (which sadly never had a London Premiere) but was also in such films as the surpringly good Zombie rom-com 'Warm Bodies' and 'Kill Your Friends' (which wasn't a zombie rom-com)

So.. that was that. An interesting premiere for a sub-optimal pen, which to my tired eyes looks like it might have turned out okay, photographically. If I get a good enough night's sleep I might come back tomorrow and think differently, and I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to that.

Not as much as I'm looking forward to (hopefully) doing it all over again tomorrow, as London Film Festival hits DAY (FREAKING) TEN!

Until then / next time!

11 Oct - The BFI LFF 'Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool' Premiere

October 11th, 2017.

After yesterday's fangirl-esque David Fincher event, where I kind of brushed off two premieres to badly do a third because I think the director is a genius, today it was back to the Regular Scheme Of Things - a Leicester Square premiere for a movie whose title didn't necessarily scream "Huge-ness!!", but it ended up being fairly decent.

Here's how it went down:

Movie title too easy to make misguidedly cynical comment about, so I won't. I'm just glad that at this point in the afternoon (about 2hrs before it starts) there are still front row spots in the public pens and people to talk to.

Elvis Costello! I've heard of him, and not just in a "don't you mean ELVIS PRESLEY?" way. (I think he's on the Austin Powers soundtrack...)

Well, that's not intimidating at all.

Excitingly, as it's getting late and I'm getting tired, I've just opened up wikipedia and (without trying too hard to figure it out by the movie's poster and title) there's a chance he's any one of : an English writer/photographer who died in 2005, a Physician OR Mathematician from the 16th Century, ANOTHER photographer (American), an Australian Footballer, A Scottish Footballer, A New Zealand Rugby League international, an American Pioneer.... or possibly a musician in the British Alternative Band "ELBOW". I'm guessing American Pioneer.

"It shrunk in the wash and would have looked ridiculous if I'd worn it". Frances Barber was in the Ian Mackellen movie "Mr Holmes", but also seven episodes of Doctor Who as "Eye Patch Lady"

I... don't know who the man in the hat is. And I need sleep more than I need (at this point) to know. I'm sorry. I guess that's why TOPSHOP BLOG has a media pen presence and I'm listening to 'The Martian' soundtrack right now. (edited to add : producer Colin Vaines)

It's Annette Benning! Not only have I never photographed her (which I'm fairly certain she doesn't care about), but she's had four Oscar Nominations, and been in Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks"

"You HAD to bring up Mars Attacks...." only because of the four movies she's had Oscar Nominations for, I haven't watched three. (I have watched "American Beauty")

Spooky Profile Silhouette. I'd like to think the reporters weren't even asking questions, happy with the cool vibe the lighting was creating.

Possibly Leanne Best, who imdb.com reliably informs me was someone / something called "Min Sakul" in Star Wars : The Force Awakens. I assume that character has her own action figure, breakfast cereal, and 8-part prequel comic (edited to confirm : Leanne Best)

Michael G Wilson is Barbara Broccoli's co-producer on the most recent James Bond Films, but more than that actually wrote two bond movies (License to Kill and Octopussy) and the screenplays for three more (The Living Daylights, A View to a Kill and For Your Eyes Only). Very Cool (Very Cool)

Somebody said "Julie Walters" but (with apologies to either this or that Julie Walters), she doesn't really look like Julie Walters. But then I don't necessarily look like my name, either.

I also don't know who this is. Yet. Or why that index finger is slightly pointed and whether it means something... More news as it comes in. ( edited to add : Matt Greenhalgh, the writer, who also wrote "Nowhere Boy" which had its BFI LFF premiere back in 2009 )
