11 Jul - The 'Williams' World Premiere

July 11th, 2017.

I used to watch a lot of Formula 1 back when I lived in Australia - the late night broadcasts very conveniently ensured I was always at home. But then I moved to the UK, the home of Formula 1, and it all became trickier : live races were in the middle of the day, the broadcast rights were owned by paywalls, my little hamlet of St Albans has too many pubs to realistically ever choose between... it all became too difficult.

But today was a miserable day in London for a premiere --  and that's the kind of thing I LIVE for! Here's how it went down.

"Sponsored by MARTINI? Here's hoping that the DJ Dude starts giving away THAT kind of freeness!" - sadly your good friend and mine DJ Impact did not preside over today's rain-drenched frivolities, and my premiere journals continue to be sponsored (without their knowledge or approval) by a certain brand of Estonian Vodka.

"Is it a pony, Daddy? Is it a swing set?"

"Is it appropriate for us to salaciously chant 'take it off! take it off!!!' in the direction of that covered vehicle?"

Ah... those curves.

Ah... those curves.

I don't even know what I'm photographing, let alone whether I'm allowed to

Director Morgan Matthews directed this documentary, as well as the rather sweet 2014 movie "X+Y" - and he's won both a TV and (film/documentary) Bafta. But the guy in the background just really wishes he had a shirt like that.

Frank Williams (Wheelchair) founded WilliamsF1, a team which since 1979 has won 8 Drivers and 9 Constructors championships. That while blur in front of him is not some insane disc brake action, but rather an errant drop on the lens of my camera.

"Wait... we're putting one of our cars on open display and letting anyone photograph it and put it on the internet? Well, hell, George, why don't we just put the blueprints on Instagram while we're at it??"

"To clarify, this does not make you an affiliate of or in any way associated with our organisation" Claire Williams is daughter of Frank Williams; and WilliamsF1's current Deputy Principal (according to wikipedia, that is. My current knowledge is limited to 'those cars are fast', and 'those cars have a lot of carbon fibre')

"Obviously we wanted to race it in a purely matte black paint job, but sadly almost all of the sponsors were against it"

"That's a pretty nice looking car. I wonder if they still leave the key in the ignition...." Damon Hill won the 1996 F1 Drivers championship in a Williams car..

"Wait... is that MY car??"  indeed, the main car under the marquee/tent had Massa's name and Brazilian flag on it (but no fuzzy dice hanging off the rearview mirror... since F1 cars don't have a rearview mirror)

"You wanna race me for pink slips??" - Lance Stroll (in spite of the crippling handicap of his surname) is actually a team driver for Williams F1 this year, alongside Felipe Massa.

"Just make sure the watch is protected. It cost more than my suit, and without wanting to seem rude, the suit cost more than your education" Valtteri Bottas is a current rookie driver for Williams (the racing team, not a personal chauffeur, I gather)

"Don't photograph me : photograph the watch I'm wearing!" - David Coulthard is a former Williams driver (though his best result of 2nd in the F1 Drivers championship in 2001 was for McLaren)

"Keep an eye on those bloggers over there. One of them is going to make the obvious joke about the Will.I.Am Racing Team any moment now, and I intend to beat them....."

My first thought upon seeing that amazing moustache, even at that angle: "I don't care who it belongs to, I must have it". Turns out it belongs to the CEO of Formula 1 Chase Carey, so my ability to make easy enemy of powerful people remains undiminished by the summery London weather..

No, it's not for sale, obviously.

"You want me to make the sport of Formula 1 slower so it's easier for people whose cameras don't have dynamic enough autofocus? What are you, a Pentax owner??"

"The name's Stroll. Lance Stroll. You wanna say something about it?"

And that? is that.

And that? is that.

So, in spite of the rain, that was a premiere, my first for almost three weeks, although there is another one scheduled for Thursday (woohoo!). But still, it's another one for The Archive of Movie Premieres, which has suffered from a dearth of events of late (though uniquely the premiere prior to this one was for, of all things, the rather excellent Edgar Wright film BABY DRIVER).

Until next time!
