14 Oct - The BFI LFF 'You Were Never Really Here' Premiere

October 14th, 2017.

It's the penultimate day of BFI London Film Festival 2017, and it involved both a premiere and the BFI Awards, held elsewhere a short distance away. The premiere was fairly small... probably a good thing in light of the size of tomorrow's potential for disappointment if all goes wrong. But that's tomorrow, a whole day (and possibly a good night's sleep) away.

Here's how this went down:

Consistent Branding. So Important. (I should probably figure out which one out of @Berndt2_photo, premieresdotco, premieres.co and bernd-talasch.com I actually am at this point).

"If you tell anyone Leo's coming...... let's just say you'll never see it, or him, coming."

"Dear Sirs.... your camera works fine but where is the mobile phone holder?"

"My eyes are down here, George"

It's so ON right now. (The buildup for this premiere was very slow : among other things there was no media pen, meaning no interviews, meaning the star(s) didn't have to arrive early to leave enough time for interview commitments.

Despite the movie's title being "You Were Never Really Here", it does not appear to be a sequel or in any way related to the movie "I'm Still Here", also starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Despite having three Oscar Nominations for acting (Gladiator, Walk The Line, and The Master) there was a disappointing number of people in the crowd with seemingly no idea who Joaquin Phoenix was. I mean.... Gladiator? You haven't heard of GLADIATOR?? (Joaquin Phoenix was fantastic in the movie 'Her' as well)

"Don't touch the dress - the metal really attracts fingerprints" - this movie's director is Lynne Ramsay, who won a Bafta Film Award for best short film in 2013.

"No.... we did NOT swap hair on a dare!" (I didn't ask that question. I'm not sure who did)

"You liked me in that movie? That's awesome! I'm not actually IN that movie, but the fact that it made you think of me is still very flattering" - I have photographed Joaquin Phoenix only once, at "The Baftas Where It Snowed"

"So you see, it's really important that you be clean-shaven for this photo to work. I'm happy to wait if you need a couple of minutes or go to a convenience store to buy a razor...."

"Wassup?"

"Are you seriously using me as pretext to take a selfie with the cute guy standing behind me? Cool!"

"With these glasses I'm happy to claim I'm giving you all the honour of exclusive eye-contact from me. You're welcome!"

"So Imma just stand here and let you render me two-dimensionally in pixels that don't even move. I'm not sure you realise how crazy that is at a film festival, guys"

"Fine, I'll risk my eyesight so you can render me digitally even better"

"The expression you're thinking of is 'insouciant'. Spell it right."

"Well, it's been great standing here and being gawked at by strangers. I'll make sure to integrate the unique feeling into my next role. Cheers!"

So... that was another premiere, and tomorrow will see the end of BFI London Film Festival for 2017 and hopefully I'll be able to photograph 100% of Peter Dinklage, Woody Harrelson, Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell..... ALL of whom are expected and NONE of whom I've previously photographed.

.... I'd better recheck my batteries and memory cards!

Until Next Time One More Time!!
