13 Oct - The BFI LFF "ROMA" Premiere

October 13th, 2018.

It’s not every day I get up wondering whether aiming to photograph three premieres in one day is a good idea…. but as I made that call I wouldn’t quite have expected such varying results. The first of the three : by far the easiest and most pleasant.

Here’s how it went down:

Having just come from Leicester Square and seen the sheer ‘no-wristbands-left-bro’ madness of the buildup for “Beautiful Boy”, I was pleased to see that the BFI Embankment Cinema was an oasis of dealer-and-screaming-girls-or-both free relaxation. Might even have sat on one of those deckchairs for a while before it started..

“You’ll all be wearing them come next week” - brown leather camera holsters? Speaking for myself I have nothing in my wardrobe I could accessorise it with. Other than cameras, I mean.

My initial feeling on Time’s Up was that any organisation that bascially bullied, coerced and name-and-shamed people who didn’t wear their slogan was unlikely to last long. But now that not everyone’s wearing these badges, they somehow seem more sincere. Just my thought.

The list for this event showed only three people attending… but one of those has won two Oscars and his latest film - this one - got a SEVEN MINUTE standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. And I’ve got a ticket to see him give a screentalk tomorrow. But I have no idea who Timothee Chalamet is, and that’s clearly (going to be) to my detriment.

Marina De Tavira is in this movie and has a quite enviable imdb.com entry, perhaps in part because many of the credits are foreign and exotic sounding like 11 episodes of “Ingobernable” and “Los árboles mueren de pie” which sounds so awesome I daren’t google translate it in case it’s something plain-sounding.

In contrast, Yalitza Aparicio is in this movie and this movie is her ONLY imdb.com credit, and she plays a character with only a one-world name. Now that’s minimalism + cool!

Alfonso Cuaron won both Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for “Gravity” in 2014 (that movie also had a BFI London Film Festival Premiere)

More than I usual, I enjoyed people passing by the premiere asking me who I was photographing. I’d say “Alfonso Cuaron” and they’d have a blank look on their face. So I’d say “Won an Oscar for directing ‘Gravity’ “ and they’d have a blank look on their face (REALLY, people??) and then I’d say “oh, and he directed the third Harry Potter Movie” and finally people would nod in acknowledgement… and move on. I kind of wanted to call after them “But Wait!! I forgot to tell you about “Y Tu Mama Tambien!!”

“…. and that’s why I probably will direct a Marvel movie… if they ask me…..”

High and blind with a fisheye lens? Yes we can.

Still waiting for the interviewer to pronounce “Los árboles mueren de pie” properly.

“One-word movie titles, and One-name characters. It’s on my rider in all my film contracts”.

“That was on her rider? I had no idea. Well… we totally dodged a bullet there…”

And then, showing the importance of never typing “and then some weirdo wannabes showed up in their Elizabethan Emo Garb” without checking who you’re photographing…..

Wait… isn’t that Noomi Rapace?? As in “… of Prometheus , The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows and ALL SEVEN SISTERS in Whatever Happened to Monday fame??”

Perfect technique. And I read somewhere that when shooting, it’s more effective to softly exhale rather than hold your breath. It keeps your hands steadier and keeps your body loose.

I maintain that Prometheus is simultaneously a very good Bad Movie, or a fundamentally bad Good Movie. So…. let the staring contest begin.

You’re challenging Noomi Rapace to a staring contest? Let me interrupt this question about the movie I made that I’m very proud of to give you some advice : Don’t Do That.”

“Chalemet. So very overrated” . Well… not if you’re 25 old and female, as I was about to learn.

So… that was that. And with 2hrs until the next premiere and Leicester Square a mere 15 minute brisk amble away, all was looking good…. until I got there.

But that’s in the past (erm… future). For now, it’s +1 for the Archive of Movie Premieres and the prospect of one or two more today.

Until next <checks watch, but fails to check the next movie’s screening> time !
