26 Sep 2018 - The 'Black 47' Gala Screening

September 26th, 2018

With my aim of achieving 500 premieres firmly in mind at all times (….when not partying with supermodels and… going quail hunting and shopping for Bentleys, I mean), I do feel it increasingly necessary to take a risk and seek out smaller events with ambiguous labels like “gala” and “screening” and “fan event” and see if they might end up qualifying for a precious +1 entry into my archive.

So… a gala screening of a movie set during the Irish Potato Famine at a cinema I’d never been to a premiere for? Sign me up! Here’s how it went down:

It’s the Odeon Covent Garden. It’s slightly closer to my office than Leicester Square is, and I already have a wristband for the pen of my choice for tomorrow’s (apparently) gargantuan Lady Gaga premiere. So…. here it is. Nice frieze.

So basically this premiere ( I mean… gala ) had no outdoor elements : no barriers, no carpet, no security and certainly no wristbands. So you might wonder : was I seriously going to stand here and shoot through glass for this? …and I can’t believe after all this time you don’t know me.

The answer is of course. Even if I know when I’m not wanted, I just don’t care…. all that much.

Our first arrival …. arrives by crossing a road. Edward Fox has won both a film Bafta and TV Bafta, and was “M” in the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again”. He’s not in this movie, but he’s father to somebody who is.

“Am Hear. Wear R U?” I assume that’s how people send texts these days, and why my journal commentary really should transition to a more emoji-based method of communication. <eggplant> <fish> <sombrero> <triple clap> <champagne bottle> <smiley>

Many people trying hard to cultivate the appearances of a glitzy lifestyle would almost certainly have cropped this image so that it’s not obvious they’re shooting through glass doors at premieres I suppose. Meanwhile, these are Alana Maxwell, Crea O'Hanlon. They aren’t in this movie, but were deemed exciting enough for the Paparazzi to photograph and helpfully tag on wireimage.com

“Really? In front of this McDonald’s Branded delivery truck? Okay!” That giant truck parked in front of the cinema moments after the event started and remained parked there throughout. Meanwhile, this is (comedian?) Ed Byrne. Weirdly, the credits of this movie include : Ciaran Byrne, Brian Byrne, Liz Byrne, Kevin Byrne and David Byrne… but not in fact…. Ed Byrne.

I tend to photograph interesting people walking red carpets (and/or pavements) around premieres/galas, just in case they end up being important and difficult to photograph later. It paid off here : the man in black (far right) is James Frecheville and he’s second-billed in this movie!

“If you guys don’t start taking my photo, the guy with the Mobile Phone over there is getting an exclusive” - I’m assured that this is Dylan Haskins, though I don’t know who that is.

“It’s not so much a selfie with you that I want, Mr Broadbent : I just really want somebody else in the foreground while I include most of this truck-based mural behind me. ” Jim Broadbent is in this movie!

“You sure you wouldn’t rather have a photo of me against the truck like that other fellow? ” - Jim Broadbent was also in and at the premiere of the recent “King Of Thieves” Premiere. And the word on the side of the truck in case you’re wondering or have a bet riding on it, is “Biodiesel”

“I don’t know… if Jim Broadbent is doing selfies in front of the truck outside, maybe that’s where I should be posing” - the posing board inside the cinema is festooned with the movie’s title, the Irish Film Board logo, the word/logo “Altitude” and “Wild Card Distribution”. Again, in case you’re wondering or have a drinking game going.

“Selfie with the truck! Selfie with the truck!” - the dealers at this event weren’t the A- or B- team we know and fear, but a lower range group with nothing huge to get signed by attendees. Like Matrix or Lord of the Rings stuff, as that might’ve meant Hugo Weaving was attending. But he didn’t.

“Please reassure me that the truck outside won’t leave until after we’ve finished the Q&A” Lance Daly is the director of this film…. and the guy on the extreme right of this photo seemed fairly intent on subtly blocking my shots. But he delegated that role to somebody else for this shot.

Wait… is that LILY JAMES?? I mean.. I mean.. isn’t that James Fecheville…. standing behind LILY JAMES?? Standing in front of that biodiesel tuck??

Snapping Lily James on a pavement kinda crosses a line into street-paparazzi I have no intention of crossing no matter how pretty and talented she is (she’s in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Cinderella ). But she IS standing in front of that amazing McDonald’s Biodiesel truck.

All the photos in this journal were (discreetly?) taken by me on the Pentax with its reliable f1.8 portrait lens… but I had the “ Emma Stone Sanction ” prepared : if anyone I really wanted to photograph showed up, I had the Nikon ready to fire at 10fps. This is from that 7-or-so sec. burst. I put the camera away after that. (I feel this is not showcasing the cool factor of what I do)

Sheana Kerslake, Niamh Algar have been identified by Wireimage… but are not in this movie. And I am one again choosing to crop this shot with the door in frame. If the The Best Fifa Awards on Monday were shot using Robert Capa-esque editing trickery to make awful quality look passable…. today’s premiere is shoot-from-the-hip street photography.

Dawn O'Porter and Chris O'Dowd arrive to be photographed in front of the truck that I bet the Paparazzi are biting their elbows they didn’t think to pose people in front of. Neither are in this movie… but they’re totally truck-worthy.

“Get away from that bus. Remember whose date you are” - Chris O’Dowd’s imdb credits include The I.T. Crowd and Bridesmaids, but he was also Dude Trying To Date Natalie Portman in “Thor The Dark World”

Dawn O'Porter has two imdb acting credits : as a receptionist in the TV show “Skins” and somebody called “Team Mom” in something called “Torn”. However she also has a Producer credit in something called “ My Breasts Could Kill Me ”… so… that’s something.

I think the man at far left is Moe Dunford, and if so he’s in this movie and I’m sorry he’s a bit obscured. But not smoking is also very important and even if blurry I think this sign is relevant.

“Wait… hold on… if I beat Hugo Weaving in online scrabble he’s promised he’ll come by and attend this thing….” . That triple word score won’t be enough, though, I fear.

Emilia Fox was in the movie-I-really-liked-that-I’m-not-sure-anyone-has-heard-of “ Cashback” (2006). She’s also the older sister of Freddie Fox, who is in this movie, but not at this event. (So you’re telling me Hugo Weaving could’ve sent Keanu Reeves as his proxy? Why didn’t he DO that??)

“I’d go outside, but that truck is still there and even with my Oscar I risk being overshadowed by it TWICE in one night” - it was Best Supporting Actor for Iris (2002). And that truck is still there.

“I could distract it, or you could use the side exit?” ”That would acknowledge that it has even more power than it already does, Moe” Moe Dunford was not only in 36 episode of a show of Vikings, but was “Stark Messenger” in a single episode of Game of Thrones in 2012!!

So… I guess it’s pretty certain neither Hugo Weaving (V For Vendetta, The Matrix) or Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta, Interview with the Vampire) are coming to this thing?

Still…. that’s a mighty fine truck, as I think we can all agree.

So… that was that : a pity about the non-attendees (Barry Keoghan, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea, Freddie Fox) - and a pity this is how I choose to spend my time - but this was a Gala Screening, not a premiere, and I had nothing better to do this evening. And in any event, the addition of Lily James to any life is a satisfactory compensation. (If nothing else, because I can watch Pride & Prejudice & Zombies in parallel while editing…), as is adding another even to the Archive of Premieres.

And tomorrow? BIG premiere. Apparently. Until Then!

PS. if you ever want to follow me and laugh while I make a fool out of myself and not really care overmuch about looking terribly uncool at events, feel free to follow me on Twitter, or Facebook, or whatever it is that all the cool kids are doing now that I’ll find out about in six or seven years when they’ve all moved on.
