5 Aug - The 'Christopher Robin' European Premiere

August 5th, 2018.

If you're thinking "Wait... wasn't there already a Christopher Robin biopic last year??" you're absolutely right - it featured Domhnall Gleeson and Margot Robbie and it was not too bad a movie, albeit strange. And it even had a premiere, the journal for which is here. But, being never one to let even a hint of non-Disney-ness infect something generally associated with them, it seems Disney had a few spare sheckels lying around to fund a rival, albeit delayed, biopic. And they had a full-sized Sunday premiere to promote it, too!

Here's how it went down:

Like the last Sunday premiere in London (also a Disney premiere, also at BFI Southbank, for "The Incredibles2" , and ALSO held in full sun in 30-degree Celsius heat) - I decided to shoot the event from outside the event. Luckily, Security took a fairly dim but accepting perspective on the choice.

"The sign on the door says "This is not a trap". But isn't that what you'd write on it if it WAS a trap?" . I will concede that even as an adult I kinda love the classic Winnie The Pooh cartoons, and especially the characters Pooh, Piglet and Eeyore. (The fingernails-down-the-chalkboard Tigger and Roo... not so much).

"I'm a trademark owned by a multinational corporation!!" And now that Disney has apparently been allowed to buy 20th Century Fox, they'll soon own you, me and possibly this website too.

"Are we sure we should've given them a bar tab? In retrospect I'm not certain it was a good idea". Although not pictured, your good friend and mine Hakeem Mr Impact and DJ Fousand Aykar Wood were the'because-30-degrees-isn't-hot-enough' warmup for this event.

"You should watch it on a bigger screen. We were going for something pretty epic" - it's Director Marc Forster! Although the James Bond film he directed (Quantum of Solace) wasn't that well received, I find watching it back-to-back with Casino Royale is quite satisfying.

"I didn't look at the honey pot. Felts like a pretty obvious trap". Brigham Taylor is a producer on this film, and his imdb entry shows a mixed but interesting bag of movies : from the too easily forgotten "Remember the Titans' to the underrated 'Tron : Legacy' and the almost but not quite great "Tomorrowland"

"I found him and I'm not giving him back. And no I'm not looking into the pot" Bronte Carmichael plays 'Madeline Robin' in the movie.

Bronte Carmichael has been in two movies that had London premieres (but didn't attend either): "On Chesil Beach" (as 'Young Chloe Morrell') and "The Darkest Hour" (as "Young Girl On Tube"). But the dress is eye-catching and the hair-swish is top-notch, so she's clearly a veteran.

"If anyone asks, yes I'm Ewan McGregor" Mark Gatiss is actually not Ewan McGregor, and plays 'Giles Windsor' in the movie. And to give you a clue how bad the autofocus on the Pentax is, not even the high-contrast parallel lines on his shirt helped much. Gah... damnit Pentax.

"Please... do go on about your camera's autofocus issues, and not about how awesome Disney is for having premieres in London again" . Fine.. all hail our corporate overlords....

"Don't listen to her. That's NOT how you make ravioli" Renee Wolfe, at left, is also a producer of the film.

Wearing a pretty dress and smiling sweetly, is Hayley Atwell. Wearing a high-viz yellow dress over a black vest, shirt and tie, and presumably keeping democracy safe, is a security guard. Both a pretty good poses.

Hayley Atwell's dress is pretty amazing, but I daren't zoom in much closer on the chance it reveals limitations of Pentax autofocus, which if you're reading this you totally need to know about. She's best known for playing Agent Carter in two (three?) Marvel films and a TV Series.

"I don't know who either of these two are, but please don't tell them to leave!" Jim Cummings provides the voices of both Pooh AND Tigger in the film.

Hayley Atwell, and Hayley Atwell's dress, led past the Honey Pot Of Doom. Sitting here in my apartment hours later, I kind of wish somebody had looked inside, or given it away as freeness or something.

"Oh, yeah. Those films. I barely remember them" . It's Ewan McGregor! He plays the role of Christopher Robin in the film, and I am both stunned and happy that according to imdb.com, the #1 movie he is 'best known' for is "Moulin Rouge" - with the Phantom Menace a mere #4.

"I've been watching those Star Wars movies recently, and this force choke should totally work, even at this distance...." In my defence, I still like 4 out of the 10 Star Wars movies I've watched. And... ..STOP EVERYTHING : I JUST FOUND OUT THAT JIM CUMMINGS (left) WAS THE VOICE OF DARKWING DUCK IN THE ANIMATED SERIES!!

"Anyway, you should totally watch this movie, and as for that other film with almost the same name they released last year? Pretend it didn't happen, or wait for Disney to buy the studio that made it"

"I don't know how to best say it, so I'm just going to say it... you're really short, aren't you?" (possibly it's also perspective....) - Sophie Okonedo plays (voices) "Kanga" in the movie.

.... and yet unaccountably I'm distracted by the wrist-tattoo of the guy interviewing Hayley Atwell. More so since I've zoomed into the image and it appears to be Welsh or Gaelic or something.

"Of course, it would be just as gratifying to be recorded on an iphone through a canvas exclusion fence as by the professional equipment you've brought.... I'm sorry , what was the question again?"

" 'The Tao of Pooh'? 'The Te of Piglet'? What are you talking about, man?" I worked in a books department in a large Sydney retailer for a time last century, and those two books were pretty cool. Sadly there was never a 'the suppressed homicidal rage of Eeyore ' to round out that trilogy.

Simon Farnaby is in this movie, but his imdb entry shows his presence in many surprising movies, from Star Wars Rogue One to Paddington 1 & 2

Just liked the back-lighting showing Winnie-the-Pooh in a sun-lounger. I don't always notice these things, but sometimes I do.

"Thinning on top? Why would you even joke about that for a moment? Do you know how important a glorious mane of hair is for everything? I mean... for... for.... OH. Right. Never mind." Well... it gives you an excuse to amass a fantastic collection of caps and beanies, for one thing.

So... that was that. And given I had a cap on, and had applied sunscreen, and drunk chilled liquids beforehand (and less-chilled liquids during), and in spite of a Pentax Camera + Tamron Zoom Lens autofocus combination that makes Oil + Water seem like a tight relationship.... it wasn't too bad. And it'll go into the Archive of Premieres.

And needless to say, my a55hole train company cancelled the fast train home thus making me wait longer and travel longer... but apparently I'm not allowed to write what I believe should happen to the CEO/management of that company because inciting violence is wrong (possibly illegal?), whereas ripping off tens of thousands of people to the tune of millions of pounds, and openly lying to parliament is slightly less wrong, and apparently not illegal at all.

Until next time and/or The Revolution!
