9 Aug - 'The Wife' - UK Premiere

August 9th, 2018

After a summer season consisting mainly of heat and sunburn, today's Somerset House premiere of "The Wife" took place on a day where it rained almost constantly. I had the option of staying dry at home, or of coming in especially and risking getting soaked.

Not the most difficult choice in the world. Here's how it went down:

Somerset House is not exactly Leicester Square, and furthermore Somerset House Premieres are sadly not held on 'this' side of Somerset House, but rather the back part overlooking the Thames, next to a somewhat snooty temporary bar.

For this premiere, the back entrance of Somerset House was surrounded by barriers on three sides : two occupied by interview media, and the one facing the stairs occupied by paparazzi. That left us few, proud and geeky about 2 metres behind the paparazi. Damnit.

"Of course it could get even worse.... if it rains."

"Okay... let's both agree that either of us can sign any Guardians of the Galaxy stuff we're presented with; but if anyone brings up 101 Dalmatians stuff that's all mine"

"We're thinking of starting a rap supergroup. Anyone gonna stop us?" Jonathan Pryce, Glenn Close, Björn Runge

Björn Runge is a Swedish director whose imdb listing contains many movies I'm not familiar with, as Scandinavian films aren't as high on my list of must-see films as the myriad of Disney / Marvel / Star Wars movies I can enjoy disliking.

"Some of them want to ask you questions... and some of them want you to sign stuff... and all of them want to know where you got that scarf" . Definitely curious about the scarf. The UK is still in the EU for a little bit longer, and if I can avoid some onerous import duties that'd be sweet.

"The mojito shaker should be held at this angle, and away from the body. Trust me.. I know these things because it is my purpose to know them."

"What's with the thumb, dude? Are you trying to direct me? Martin Scorsese can direct me.... and you sir are no Martin Scorsese...."

Meawhile, Alix Wilton Regan is in this movie - and of all the things in her imdb entry, the most eye-opening is that she was the voice of Samantha Traynor in the computer game Mass Effect 3, a game whose ending amazingly resulted in no jailtime for any of its perpetrators. Samantha Traynor's voice however is not something I remember having a problem with.

"Let it go. Yes, the ending was bad.... but it wasn't that bad". It was like somebody inventing the cutest animal ever for the express purpose of killing it. But yeah.. no... sure. It could have been worse, somehow. Theoretically....

Meanwhile.... "Seriously, I thought this premiere was going to be held in a rural location. I *wanted* to blend in, not stand out!!"

"I loved you in 'Air Force One' !!" - sucks that the paparazzi get to do their editing about 4 hours before I load my journals (more if my train company achieves particularly spectacular levels of incompetence)

I don't know who this is. The feeling's mutual, I'm sure.

"Are you trying to direct me from behind my back, or are you mistaking me for Meryl Streep from 'The Devil Wears Prada again??" - Glenn Close, incidentally, has SIX Oscar nominations to her name, though sadly no wins yet. She was good in The Devil W--.... I mean Guardians of the Galaxy, though.

"We're thinking of running in 2020" - Jonathan Pryce and Glenn Close both have political experience of a sort : he was the US President in two G.I.Joe movies, while Glenn Close was US Vice President in the Harrison Ford movie 'Air Force One'.

I don't know who this is, but she's young and pretty and 90% of the way there to looking bored and/or bemused at being photographed, which is the key to dealing with fame at a young age.

I don't know who this is either, but she's young and pretty and about 125% of the way there to looking bored at being photographed by the paparazzi.

Jeremy Irvine was last photographed at the "MammaMia! Here We Go Again" World Premiere a few weeks back. Interesting note : the link to the journal for that movie is the 9th most viewed Tweet I've ever put on Twitter.

"Of course being the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones was a lot of fun... but you don't really have to refer to me as a religious authority. Unless you want to that is"

"And none of you brought Pirates of the Caribbean stuff for me to sign? Those movies were big for a time..." - Jonathan Pryce played Keira Knightley's father in those movies.

So... that was that. An interesting premiere, and I only got mildly rained upon. More premieres are scheduled for next week, so there is something for me and the size of my Archive of Movie Premieres look forward to.

Until next time!
