15 Oct - The BFI LFF 'Wild Rose' Premiere

October 15th, 2018.

After yesterday’s ‘Broken Day’, today I decided to show a bit of optimism and try to photograph two premieres rather than just one. This was partially helped by going to Leicester Square and getting a last wristband with #19 - a remarkably low number for my relatively late arrival. Translation : the night’s ‘main’ premiere - for “Life Itself” it was not going to be a big premiere.

So I headed to the Embankment Cinema first instead. Here’s how it went down:

The BFI Film Festival’s temporary cinema at Embankment is about a 20 minute semi-panicked casual saunter through traffic-packed London Streets from Leicester Square. But it’s also quieter, calmer and painted a more soothing colour of green.

I got briefly very excited at this List - it suggested that not one but three to four premieres would be taking place (at the same time???) - and the larger than expected number of photographers suggested it was certainly worth being here

The ‘True’ list for this premiere…. was sadly somewhat smaller. Still printed at A4-size and in colour, but containing less faces.

“I think you’ll find this barrier is pretty impregnable…” ”Well… you could always walk around it!” ”Well, sure. But only if you thought two-dimensionally or higher” That’s pretty impregnable.

Jessie Buckley is in this movie, but I’m going to pause to admire the gorgeous swirly bokeh created by the Nikon 80-200 at this distance. Jessie Buckley is also pretty, but I didn’t have anything to do with that.

Blurry therefore Art, I like to say. (Take the photo first, worry about the settings later, I also sometimes say)

“What’s the C Word? Well sadly it’ not cravat.” Nicle Taylor is the writer of this movie, and also the TV Movie ‘The C Word’. Which is a real TV Movie.

If the Bob Harris identified by wireimage is the same as the Bob Harris I’m looking at on imdb.com, he’s best known for being in one movie and one tv show from the 1970s, though he played ‘himself’ in the TV Show “Whistle Test” from 1972-1979.

I’ve subsequently shifted my research away from imdb.com and onto wikipedia, which more helpfully advises that the same Bob Harris as the one in imdb.com has been a BBC radio presenter for over 40 years. So hopefully that’s him, and not a 31 year old Scottish footballer.

“I hope you don’t mind my saying so, but the top of your head is unusually flat. Can I use that for a character in an upcoming piece I’m developing?”

Faye Ward is a producer of this film, as well as the upcoming Stan & Ollie, which is this very festival’s closing film in <checks watch> <remembers calendars exist> six days from now.

Tom Harper is the director of this film, and among other things he’s also directed six episodes of the TV Series “War and Peace” - which Jessie Buckley has also been in!

“Well… I had hoped there’d be more War in War & Peace. Certainly more space dogfight scenes and laser battles. That’s why I kind of wanted to make this movie, which is about country’n’western music…."

“Check the deleted scenes. We put in a couple of lightsaber battles. Ps. don’t tell Disney”

So… that was both fast and enjoyable. A quick trek to Leicester Square and I’d be doing it all again about 45minutes later for “Life Itself”. But for now, it’s +1 for the Archive of Movie premieres, and in the apartment where I’m typing this I might grab a drink before I work on the next journal ahead of an all too brief sleep before I’m off to my desk again.

Until… very soon!

ps…. I vaguely recall having a facebook page and a twitter page. you can occasionally find me on either.
