2nd Oct 2019 - The BFI LFF 'The Personal History Of David Copperfield' Premiere

October 2nd, 2019.

It’s (finally) here, and as one of my most recent facebook profiles promised : disturb my Chi during London Film Festival and feel my blind unfocussed wrath…. or earnest whining…. or both. Because these two weeks… well… I kinda love ‘em when it all goes right. And today… it’s day 1.

Here’s how it went down:

I don’t know what to say. it’s finally here, I’M finally here… and somehow it’s not torrentially raining and neither am I festooned by hordes of autograph dealers (they’re at the other end of the Long Pen)

“I think the lens cap is - somehow -now digital. How the hell do I take it off??” - technology keeps on advancing, whether we ask for it or not.

“Of course it’s official. It’s PRINTED. And ADHESIVE. There’s almost no way it could be faked by any modern means I’m aware of” - my wristband to the event was green. It had a hand-written #27 on it… also hard to fake, primarily because I’m not sure exactly who would.

“I feel a presence I’ve not felt since…. well… the last time somebody crept up behind me on a red carpet. It didn’t work out so well for my aggressor then…… so let’s see if they stay when I turn around wielding my can of bear mace” - 9 out of 10 autograph dealers dislike bear mace. But not for the expected reason.

It’s a face that says “I know Dev Patel is handsome and talented and charismatic… but the Timothee Chalamet premiere is TOMORROW”

If you’re a fan of Independence Day, Bad Boys, Wild Wild West and the Fresh Prince of Bel Air… good news : there’s another authentic Will Smith out there who’s been in NONE of those things!!

“The dress style doesn’t have an official name, no.. and we certainly appreciate the question. But London Fashion Week was so 3 weeks ago” Morfydd Clark is in this movie, and also had a role in movies she wasn’t at the premiere of such as the excellent “Pride & Prejudice & Zombies” and the best movie about Alligators On The Loose I’ve seen this year, “Crawl” .

“I’ve deputised her to sign autographs on my behalf. She’ll also Dev’s, Hugh’s, and Armando’s if you ask nicely” - Morfydd Clark plays the role of ‘Dora’ in the film.

Surprise attendee not-associated-with-this-film : Dexter Fletcher, director of such films as “Wild Bill” , “Eddie the Eagle” , and “RocketMan”. His hair has separately had cameos in game of thrones and the 2016 ghostbusters reboot.

“ Shirt-and-jacket-and-no-tie is stil IN this year… but you feel free to stick with t-shirt-under-a-ski-jacket … maybe one of these years it’ll work out for you” Anthony Welsh is in this movie, and among his lengthy filmography is two episodes of that ‘Fleabag’ show I keep hearing about. And my ski jacket is windproof and keeps me dry.

“60 imdb credits you’ve never heard of and all you want to talk about is my scarf, am I right?” Darren Boyd is in this movie in the capacity of acting the role of Edward Murdstone. And he is correct.

“That guy says I’m supposed to point at him and imply his website is awesome. But Mum says he swears too much. Still, he gave me a fiver so here I am” Jairaj Varsani plays young David Copperfield in this movie, and it’s only my utter commitment to honesty that compels me to admit that as he’s not (yet?) on wireimage, I don’t know with 100% certainty that this is Jairaj Varsani.

The suit is certainly sharp, and the bone structure admirable. But as we like to say in Tha Biz… he’s no Chalamet.

Nikki Amuka-Bird has been in no less than two movies I was at the premiere of that she wasn’t (or, possibly, I didn’t photograph her, or, possibly, I don’t remember and it’s late and I have work deadlines tomorrow so who has time to check) : A Private War , and The Children Act . She was also in Jupiter Ascending, which was technically a movie.

Aimée Kelly might be the one wearing the sparkly dress and an acting credit in this movie, but elsewhere is a true master of his craft, some three years since his official retirement from premieres (though he unretired once for The Festival)… the mystical, sensational sensei that is simply : MO.

“I kinda get the feeling that the guy I was posing with was somehow more of a big deal than I was… shouldn’t he have been on the carpet, then?” - Aimée Kelly plays the role of Emily in this film

“I didn’t ask why. As long as their cheque cleared, I didn’t care so much” Paul Whitehouse’s interview on the red carpet was by far the most amusing… and a quick look at the imdb.com credit listing for the film reveals that he’s the ONLY castmember with no character name attached.

Dev Patel plays the lead role of David Copperfield in the film - I photographed him at yesterday’s torrentially ‘intimate’ BFI Luminous event … and also previously at the BFI LFF premiere of the excellent film “Lion” .

“Hey, your camera survived yesterday? I’m surprised” - no, I’d’ve been surprised if my damn TRAIN operator’s network survived that most uncommon of British weather patterns - RAIN - yesterday.

“The obvious question you’re tiptoe-ing around is one I’m happy to answer, Linda. NO, I haven’t met Timothee Chalamet, and yes I fear, admire, and am desperate to meet him” Some combination of me and hundreds of teen girls risk devastating disapointment tomorrow. Tune in later tomorrow to see how it all goes.

Gwendoline Christie, in case you’re wondering, is tall.

Director Armando Iannucci, meanwhile, has snuck past all of us to get to the interview spot without me getting a single photo of him front-on.

“Hey, if you didn’t like my last movie, that’s all you’re getting, portrait-wise” . Armando Iannucci’s prior film was 2017’s “The Death of Stalin” whose supposed comedy utterly eluded me. It felt at the time like…like…a movie set in the 1950s that’s populated with Russian politicians that… hey, I’ll speak for myself… I’ve barely heard of, let alone recognise the comedic potential of. And if comedy is all about timing, arent’ you about 70 years late to this party? Anyway… we don’t really exchange Christmas cards, me’n’Armando. But it’s more civil between us than me and Scarlett Johansson.

“Somebody had to make the joke to save you the bother of doing it” Daisy May Cooper’s attire for the event was suitably magical. I last photographed her at this year’s TV Baftas wearing… erm… garbage, and a had made up of a dustbin lid with a seagull on it. And I’m more or less certain I’m making none of that up.

“Did you get it? Because I ain’t spinning again!” Actually, honesty compels me to admit that while Daisy May Cooper actually DID ask whether we’d gotten the back of the jacket… and implied she’d show it again if we had not.

Gwendoline Christie is best known for being Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, and the most compelling new character of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy : Captain Phasma. I really hope they kill her character off a third time in the next movie, just to underscore how useless… I mean… erm.. AWESOME that character is.

“I’m truly saddened that you don’t like the new Star Wars , bro. “ But… but..you didn’t even let me give you the link to the youtube videos where that Mauler guy does a 5.5 hour dissection on exactly how bad The Last Jedi is!! (well.. Part1 is here )

“They sure do sound insistent…. but I like to think they’re shouting out for another guy who doesn’t look like me but has exactly the same name as me” - Hugh Laurie, best known for playing the role of House, MD in 176 episodes. Hey plays the role of… erm… Mr Dick in this movie.

So… that was it. Day 1 or 12, or in my case Day 3 of a chain of 14 days (starting with the premiere of Judy two days ago, and BFI Luminous in the wind and the rain last night). And the Archive of Premieres gets another +1. And it’s a long(ish) road, but here’s hoping I can make it to tomorrow, because it should / could be a BIG one.

Until next time!

ps. if you want to know when I post one of these journals (I intend to post a lot in the upcoming fortnight) feel free to follow me on facebook, or on twitter, or on instagram. I forget what I’m called on instagram. Premieresdotco? Doesn’t matter. I ain’t got no algorithm working for me.
