4th Oct 2019 - The BFI LFF 'Hope Gap' Premiere

October 4th, 2019.

I’d only just come from Embankment Cinema, having photographed Shia Labeouf and the two directors of ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’, and made it to Leicester Square in time to… well… not quite get myself into one of the small public pens, but at least find a spot to take some photos of… whoever would turn up.

Here’s how it went down:

“I really gotta go… but it’s Art. Does going on it additinally make it MORE art?” London Film Festival Logo made of Flowers And A Dog, centre of Leicester Square, London.

Pen setup for the premiere. I had a wristband, but my first port of call was Embankment Cinema, hoping to get a pre-premiere for THIS premiere. (London Film Festival involves a lot of planning, exacerbated by the problem that I have no idea of the full breadth of guests attending what screenings and premieres). Still… if nothing is happening at Embankment, at least I know something is/will be happening here.

“Yo… what’s happening down at Embankment? Anything weirder than what’s happening here?” Weird is subjective…but I’m all about the subjective.

“Yoyoyo Lesstah Skware…. MAKE SOME SOUNDS!! Damn… this isn’t as easy as DJ Impact makes it seem” Your good friend and mine, Hakeem Mr Impact is (I believe) still in Japan for the Rugby World Cup… and I hope he’s baffling the Japanese with his rhymes, rhythm, and only occasional (and possibly deliberately ironic) lapses in geography.

I believe that the secret to an AWESOME WALK <tm> is to walk as if you’ve got a posse of armed mercenaries directly behind you. And this BFI delegate? HAS THAT WALK. The hair swish on top of it? Pretty amazing. Also : there’s a premiere about to start, but I don’t mind telling you I could leave right now and be pretty happy.

“I hear what you’re saying about that lady’s walk and her hair… and while I agree I can’t help but feel slightly insulted….” William Nicholson has two Oscar nominations to his credit - both for screenwriting : Gladiator (2000) and Shadowlands (1994) - as well as being screenwriter of such films as Unbroken, Les Miserables, Mandela : Long Walk to Freedom, and Breathe.

“It’s not that I don’t trust y’all…. but I am putting a second podlock on this handbag BEFORE I head to the public pens” - Annette Benning plays the lead in this film, and I last photographed her at the BFI Premiere of ‘Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool’ two years ago.

Annette Benning has had three Oscar nominations for best actress (American Beauty, Being Julia, and The Kids Are All Right) and another for best Supporting actress (The Grifters).

“I don’t know who you are… but it is a great hug so I’m not going to call for security…” Fortunately, it’s not some random stranger - it’s the director.

Annette Benning looks in my direction, and all I have to contend with is the hair of the woman with the widest white hair it is possible to find outside of a hurricane.

“I know this is switching the interviewer/subject paradigm a bit… but what’s it like having that much hair to that width… I’m asking for a friend” ”Well, it takes ages to brush” ”If you’re looking to me for sympathy on that front… keep waiting. Or ask me about my film. Either or.”

“I sure showed her. Now… anybody got a beanie I could borrow?” Sadly, I need mine. Among other things, to fail to chivalrously offer it to any good looking woman who might need it .

“I wasn’t there. I stayed where it was dry like normal people” Our next arrival is in this movie : Aiysha Hart - best known for being in the movie ‘Colette’ which had its premiere in the rain at last year’s BFI London Film Festival. Apparently it’s meant to rain HEAVILY this coming Sunday. I shall double the thicknes of my beanie(s) to compensate.

“Okay, this looks a bit like a bullet-point list of things. William Nicholson’s screenplays are typically a lot more sophisticated”

“Shia Labeouf was at a premiere for the same movie TWICE in two days?? Why didn’t anyone tell me??”

I kind of want this to be Brad Pitt, just leaning against a random pillar inside the Odeon Leicester Square for a random London Film Festival premiere.

“Jerry? Jerry? Get me five thousand shares at price. What do you mean, you’re an Uber Delivery guy? Is your name Jerry? Then get me those shares, Jerry!” David M Thompson is one of this movie’s 11 producers.

“I told them we needed at least 15, but somehow we made it work despite having almost a third less than that number.” Sarada McDermott is another one of the 11 producers of this film. (I actually spent time speaking with a Dutch producer in the queue for the premiere of ‘The King’ yesterday…. and they work pretty hard)

So… that was that. Or at least until some maniacal laughter came around to distract me... was it another Extinction Rebellion protest? Or that dude with the loud hailer that spent time in the park yesterday haranguing attendees of the premiere with challenge of “what are you doing with your lives???”

No… it was something stranger and scarier….

It’s a pity Joker wasn’t given a BFI LFF premiere (or indeed any premiere) in London. I’m looking forward to seeing it… probably AFTER Film Festival.

still… that’s another premiere : two in one day. And tomorrow? Erm… hopefully two. Possibly three. But hopefully two.

Until next time!
