10th Oct 2019 - The BFI LFF 'Le Mans 66' Headline Gala

October 10th, 2019.

Having just come from Embankment, and the ‘Official Secrets’ premiere with Keira Knightley, I decided NOT to go into the pens for this one, as the late arrival time and guests did not appear to warrant being trapped there.

More fool me.

Here’s how it went down:

The headline gala poster is certainly enough to arouse excitement in passersby who assume that noise and a red carpet with that poster on display means that Matt Damon and Christian Bale should attend. What with this being the BFI London Film Festival.

“Wait… hold on. I just want to catch the precise moment you’re informed that Matt Damon and Christian Bale are NOT expected at this premiere” - to be fair, the BFI LFF announced its expected guest lists for the festival weeks ago, and only James Mangold was confirmed then.

Okay, if he captured it in the pen, I captured it in the crowd outside.

“Still… it feels pretty comfortable leaving us 2-dimensional representations of the underlying actors here as our proxy, don’t you think, Matt?” ”Shhh… I’m trying to enjoy the period-accurate music they’re playing” It was a mixture of Hendrix, Stones, and LOUD, for about three full repeat cycles during the event.

James Mangold is the director of this film, and he has one thing in common with Gavin Hood (who directed the movie “Official Secrets” whose premiere I just came from) - he’s ALSO directed a Wolverine movie - two in fact - “Logan” and “The Wolverine” .

“ ‘3:10 to Yuma’ was never going to have a sequel. I mean… what on earth wold they have called it?” That movie, which was very good, starred Christian Bale, who is in this movie but not, as stated, this premiere. (‘4:11 To Yuma 2’ would be my suggestion)

Photo reversed for your (my) convenience. As yet, I am not aware of who ‘My Talented Queen Caitriona’ is.

“Who is my ‘My Talented Queen Caitriona’? Probably Caitriona… I know her, you know” Jack McMullen is in this movie.

Noah Jupe is also in this movie, but in dozens of frames of concerted photography, I was never able to photograph him front on. Or confirm that his face has another side, come to think of it. He was, however, in the movie ‘ A Quiet Place ’, whose budget was relatively low that I doubt they’d have been able to generate an artificial second side to his face. It’s probably safe to assume he has one. A second side to his face, I mean.

Caitriona Balfe is pretty and wearing some interesting jewellery… but I’m kind of freaked out by the Security Lady’s stern expression, and I don’t know what I’ve done to earn it. Yes, I did choose ‘Maleficent Mistress Of Evil’ over any premiere or event hosted by London Film Festival yesterday… but so did basically EVERYONE..

“High five me later if you get the chance. Also : please don’t assume this is an invitation to seek that chance!”

“It’s a nice sign… can I argue that as a proclaimed queen I’m entitled to order it to be surrendered to me? Is that how it works?” - Caitriona Balfe is best known for being in some 55 episodes of the series “Outlander” as well as the recent “Dark Crystal : Age of Resistance” series, which had a premiere in London and advertised it as if it was a covert dark op (ie. not at all)

So….. given my failure to properly photograph either Noah Jupe or Jack McMullen… I decide to stay where I am and hope to photograph them leaving the event. It’s something I dislike doing, and part of the OTHER reason why I didn’t want to be in the Public Pen : I wanted to LEAVE!

It’s Jack McMullen!! And also a concerned looking lady on the left, possibly worried that I might miss out on photographing Noah Jupe, who is somewhat smaller than Jack McMullen.

This photo of Caitriona Balfe pretty much makes waiting for the stars of the film to leave worth it…. and it had better be, because I missed out on Noah Jupe.

“Yo… anyone seen Noah? I’m supposed to share a ride with him….”

So… that was that. And Squarespace issues notwithstanding, it was always going to be yet another past-midnight finish. Or in this case… post 1am finish.

Until (yawn) next time. Tomorrow. I mean… today.

I’ll do some better links tomorrow. I mean… today.
