4th Oct 2019 - The BFI LFF 'The Peanut Butter Falcon' (mini) Premiere

October 4th, 2019.

Due to a bit of luck, today I managed to photograph some of the stars of a premiere that was initially held yesterday, which I missed because I had a… erm… date with Timothee Chalamet (so to speak) for ‘The King’.

But Peanut Butter Falcon has a more evocative name. Here’s how it went down:

For the first time this Film Festival, we’re at the temporary Embankment Cinema, which are built in the leadup to the festival and pulled down afterwards. “But aren’t there two more cinemas within a stone’s throw of the Odeon Leicester Square??” I hear you ask. To which the answer is, OF COURSE NOT - there’s FOUR!! (Vue, Cinemax, Prince Charles and another Odeon). Still… the difference comes in handy.

We were here (initially) to possibly get an ‘advance’ ‘pre-premiere’ for Hope Gap, but instead all the poster-boards were for ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’. Was Shia Labeouf here? Well… for now I had a view of half a door. Who could say?

It’s Shia Labeouf!! I’ve photographed him twice before : at Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen back in 2008, and the Brad Pitt World War 2 tank movie ‘Fury’ . in 2014. His t-shirt says ‘Roma’ and he’s waering sneakers. More news as I have it.

“She stopped me too, bro. Tried to sell me a time-share in Miami. Told her I had a side-business selling used cameras. That got rid of her. Also : don’t copy my strategy : it’s MY STRATEGY”

Shia Labeouf has seen something he doesn’t like on THAT side, and all of a sudden I’m reassured by the barriers between him and me/us. I always thought they were to keep fans away from cast… now I’m thinking the opposite might also be useful.

Shia Labeouf seems more comfortable with THIS side, which is good because I’M on that side.

“Please don’t hurt me. I just want an autograph. For my cousin. She’s a big fan. Her name is not important"

Shia Labeouf enters his van, and I feel only just bold enough with a barrier and a passenger seat and a rather thin bit of roadside between us if he takes offense. I’m also wearing a beanie, which I can remove and look like a totally different person.

“Barbara? Something weird just went down. No, of COURSE not as weird as my hat. Do you think I would have called you if that had happened?” Shia Labeouf has left the area, but surprisingly the premiere is not over. And, not to spoil anything further below, the saga of “things on peoples’ heads” has also not necessarily hit its apex.

“You’re giving me a ticket to a session of my own movie whose secreening has already finished? How thoughtful - they’ll make a perfect memento” Tyler Nilson is one of two directors of this film - they both stayed behind to chat with fans and sign autographs.

“Where’s Zack? We try not to ask… not because we don’t care, it’s just that anyone we ask would be standing next to us, and not where he is either, you know?” - Zack Gottsagen was at yesterday’s event for this film, but not today’s.

“I’m pretty sure this is a parking voucher. But if my signature helps you get a discount, good for you!” Michael Schwattz is this films other director.

Not sure what to say about this… but I felt it was vital it be included in this journal.

“he put it in the journal. I’d say that’s worth a high-five” ”who’s HE? and what JOURNAL?” ”Doesn’t matter. High-five me, bro!”

Have to say - I love the idea of directors staying back AFTER a screening just to interact with fans. Sure, I missed out on tickets to a Bafta screentalk by Martin Scorsese, and I bet he won’t be chatting with fans after screenings of ‘The Irishman’ next week. In part because it’s a 3 hour movie and will finish very late.

My rule is : if I go to the premiere, I’ll make sure to watch the movie -and on the strenght of this premiere, I’m looking forward to it!

So… that was that. And though we had wristbands to the next premiere in Leicester Square (Hope , we also realised we didn’t have a lot of time to get there….. at times like this, you kinda hope it’s small…

Until next time (about half an hour from now)

For now, it’s +1 to the archive, and a traditional invite to follow me on Twitter, or Facebook, or Instagram if you ever want to know when I post one of these.
