23 Nov 2014 - The 'Paddington' World Premiere

November 23rd, 2014.

It was cold and it was raining on this particular Sunday but I figured it might be worth coming in for this premiere and sacrificing a rare weekend day otherwise doing nothing.

And although I'd somehow managed to misplace or lose my copy of the photo I've been waiting since 2008 to get signed by Nicole Kidman.... I was there. With an umbrella. And a waterproof jacket. And two of the three cameras I brought with me would survive the journey.

Here's how it went down:

This wasn't the queue... it was the pre-queue to get put into a pen. My number was #54. Was that good? It was hard to say - it was cold and raining and I wasn't sitting down and having a coffee.....

Some time later, I had my spot, and sadly it was side-on to the stage but it was front row and gave me a good opportunity to ... well... get rained on for about another 90minutes (I continue to claim that what I do is deeply sexy)

With about half an hour to go, the red carpet looks more like a swamp than the kind of thing Nicole Kidman's going to want to be surfing down.

Either he's wearing an adorable hat, or he's wearing the main character's skin over his head. So I'm trying to figure out whether this is very cute or unspeakably horrifying

"Stop calling me 'Q'. Or 'Paddington'. Those are characters and I'm an actor" Ben Whishaw, the voice of Paddington is first to arrive. I've previously photographed him at the premieres of "Skyfall" and "Cloud Atlas"

"It wouldn't be historically accurate for me to sign any of this, you do realise?" Hugh Bonneville is arguably best known for being in Downton Abbey, a show which I haven't yet started watching because I need to watch Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and arguably the rest of Phineas & Ferb first.

"My hairstyle? It takes 4 hours to arrange like this, and then a further 20mins to effortlessly toussle". It's the toussle that does it.

"This is one of those xylene based sharpies, isn't it? It's not just for signing autographs, is it?"

If you can keep the outline of your Q/Bond fanfic to less than ten seconds, Ben Whishaw will hear you out. And perhaps ask you for the url of the website it's featured on.

It's Nicole Kidman! If I'd manged to find the photo I'd taken at the premiere of 'Australia' six years ago, I'd be getting a lot more excited than I am, and also be much less happy about how heavily it's raining.

Along with being a fellow Aussie, Nicole Kidman has won a best Actress Oscar, married a country singer...... and is wearing the dress she's wearing. (I'm sorry. I couldn't think of a third thing)

"Yeah, I've won Grammies. But I'm also okay with holding this umbrella" Keith Urban is both Nicole Kidman's husband and a self-titled album named after Keith Urban. (I'm hungry and I need to get this journal uploaded)

"Did I make this dress myself? Umm... no. But I paid for it myself. Actually that's not true either, my Agent organised it for me. And I'm not sure if she stole it or paid for it or what. You want me to sign something?"

"I'm on your iPod? That's pretty cool!! Although... iPods are mostly obsolete these days, so it's not quite as cool". Nicole Kidman is featured on the Moulin Rouge Soundtrack... plus she dueted with Robbie Willams on 'Somethin' Stupid' back in 2001

Is it eye-contact? Technically, no, sadly, as I'm looking through the viewfinder of my Nikon. So I guess it's the Nikon that's got eye-contact and not me.

Ben Whishaw is escorted off the stage to take have a few photos taken with a statue of Paddington, after which he proceeded to enter the cinema.... possibly to watch the movie he's in, or possibly to watch Interstellar. Because that's worth catching in cinemas rather than waiting to watch it on your iPhone or tablet.

Nicole Kidman's hairstyle. Not sure if highly elaborate and slightly toussled, or whether somewhat elaborate and highly toussled.

Possibly Michael Bond, creator of Paddington. Alternatively, he might be an ordinary citizen like you or me or Kanye West.

David Heyman is a Producer ... and while I'm still hazy on what exactly a producer is or does, his name has been attached to ALL the Harry Potter films, Alonso Cuaron's "Gravity" and I Am Legend in that capacity. I, meanwhile, have only been to three Harry Potter premieres and the premiere of Gravity.

I'm not sure if he's in the movie, but the hat looks great and is possibly also waterproof.

On the strength of the (possible waterproofness of the) hat alone, I'm posting a second photo. It's a World Premiere, after all.

"I know it's unprofessional for me to ask, but if I could get you to read over my Downton Abbey fanfic, that'd be awesome. It's actually set in the fair future, but it stays true to the themes..."

Actress Sally Hawkins is in this film - she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Blue Jasmine", with Cate Blanchett who was both nominated and won Best Actress for her role in that film.

"Please keep your Paddington fanfic clean. Seriously.. the author is a sweet guy and it's possible he's in attendance, depending on whether that old guy above was him or not" Paul King is best known for directing The Mighty Boosh, and he also directed this film.

Sally Hawkins flits this // close by me, which is notable as I am currently Nikon-less and have been for much of the premiere. This is particularly awful as the failure of the D700 for its unknown "fEE / r21" error means I have mised my first chance in six years of photographing supermodel Kate Moss. ....  I may forgive the Nikon in time.

This is possibly my favourite / most unexpected shot of the premiere. My spot for photographing the stage was not conducive to anything more than hoping for a random turn my way... it only really happened here.

Julie Walters is by this stage about as sick of the weather at this premiere as I, my waterlogged jacket, my waterlogged shoes, and my <unknown error> Nikon are.

Our final arrival of note is actor Jim Broadbent who won a Best Actor Oscar in 2001 for Iris, but like me the IMDB prefers to note his excellent performances in Moulin Rouge, Cloud Atlas and the Harry Potter films.

Still not sure whether to watch his own movie yet again, or settle in and finally watch 'Interstellar'. I say catch Interstellar.

So.. that was that. Camera down, waterlogged me and an umbrella whose skills at keeping me dry range somewhere between "fly netting" and "why am I bothering". There's another premiere on Tuesday. I'll probably head to that too, if I can (not so much based on the awesomeness of this one, but based on a desire to atone for my relative underperformance at this one).

Damnit, where can I find a field hospital in this part of London?? Also, Dear Nikon -- if you have a 'search' function on your website, under what circumstances would it NOT be appropriate to map to a list of error functions that could disable the use of your cameras?

On the plus side, it's another entry for my "Archive of Movie Premieres" the last few of which included:

Horrible Bosses 2 : with Jennifer Aniston, Charlie Day and Olivie Wilde!
The Hunger Games Mockingjay1 : With J-Lawz, L-Hemz, J-Hutchz and E-Bankz!
Interstellar : with Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain!

Until next time!

Nikon update1 : apparently the 'r21' is not an error, it's the number of photos left on the buffer before it's full (thanks, Nikon twitter feed, also, okay, fine, my fault for not knowing that). But the 'fEE' error, which IS an error, more worryingly, relates to an issue with the lens and its aperture ring setting... an issue that did not seem to exist when I checked it. More news as the camera/lens dries, I guess...

Nikon update2 : Camera is fine, however the Lens is not. 50mm f1.8.... I shall miss thee.
